My DC's school is closed again tomorrow, so theres been no school since thursday as no water..

so far since 1st september they've had 1 training day, 7 days closure related to building works for a 2 classroom extension (water is off due to it being connected to the mains)
In addition due to class teachers illness they've had 10 days teaching from her, rest of the time it's been supply teachers (no more than 2 days from 1) and the rest of the time they've been shifted into different classes in the school..

theyre in yr 3 and only homework theyve had so far is reading, though today we 'played schools' so that i felt they were doing something.

DS is a nightmare as he has no routine (SN), takes 2-3 hours to settle him to sleep at night and he waked 4-5 times a night, so im knackered and cant even have a sneaky nap when theyre at school cos it's closed!

sorry that turned into a self indulgent rant.... Blush

none of it sounds ideal and YANBU to be feeling a bit fed up about it

but it was probbaly all unavoidable, teachers cant help being ill and assuming you were given prior notice of the building works closure then thats not really any ones fault either

heres to the teacher getting well, the building work being finished and you getting a nap Grin

we were told on thursday it would be closed friday and found out today when we rocked up to school - despite listening to the nominated radio station from 6:30 (so glad i was lazy and drove instead of a wasted 1/2 hour walk!) hence why i phoned a short while ago to ask about tomorrow!

may have to stock up on wine......

Why was the building work not done before term started? Is DS actually going to receive the statutory minimum annual amount of education at this rate?

catfunt · 11/10/2010 16:17

it was started during the holidays but not completed on time, im beginning to doubt if they will BeebBeta!
Its frustrating me as its a good school but is seriously letting DS down at the moment, His twin sis is suffering too obviously but copes much better with it, her biggest bugbear is missing her friends!

At our school they had a whole new kitchen put in and it wasn't finished even though they were working on it throughout the six weeks holiday. School still opened but everyone had to take packed lunch for a few extra days.

What does the school expect working mums to do? I hope it is opened soon, catfunt.

YANBU, that amount of notice is completely unreasonable, did they know in advance there was going to be a problem? Or is it an emergency shut down because the bulders have drilled througha pipe or something?

I am a teacher and if my dd's school did this to me I would be livid as I would have to take a day unpaid and risk really peeing my head teacher off, at least if you know ina dvance you can be ready and possibly arrange some childcare but to just find out on the day would have me fuming.

mumblechum · 11/10/2010 17:23

What the hell are working parents supposed to be doing with their children?

Hassled · 11/10/2010 17:25

The problem will almost certainly lie with the shiter than shite building contractors and project managers that schools tend to use. They're limited in choice because of things like CRB checking of contractors, stuff like that. My school have had a hideous experience with a bunch of idiots who still, a year after the smallish project was due to complete, have a long list of snagging to sort out.

Training Day and no water - completely fair enough. 7 days of building works that requires the school to be closed = piss poor planning and/or piss poor contractors, and you should write to your Governing Body. See if you can find the Governor who chairs the premises/site committee.
