to spend 20mins trying to open a plastic package?

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/10/2010 11:33

i brought a duracell rechargeable multi charger as get through so many batteries in this house Grin

but it has taken me 20mins attacking the plastic hard cover with a knife to get into the product Hmm

why do manufactures make the product packaging so hard to get into? Angry

it is hard plastic, that cant be ripped or torn with teeth (yes i tried) and even once i managed to get the knife into the plastic,i still couldnt rip it as so tough

i couldnt keep jabbing the knife into the plastic or i would have damaged the circuits in the charger as it has no top (so batteries can be easily inserted)

same with kids toys, all seems to have the little plastic wires attaching toy to cardboard which drive me insane

aibu in just wanting to buy something and open and use in a few seconds? Grin

I think you deserve a prize for endurance.

iliketosleep · 10/10/2010 12:21

Did you not have any scissors?? Wink

sugarlake · 10/10/2010 12:23

Oh, don't get me started on packaging. Angry(Holds up two cut thumbs with plasters on them)

I needed a Stanley knife to get into a torch packet, the torch was also held on with thick plastic straps which I slashed open along with both thumbs. Note how that injury was repeated for maximum sympathy.

And can you ever find scissors when you need them?

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/10/2010 12:24

scissors didnt work as plastic was too tough - they wouldnt cut through it

was tempted to go and get dh hedge trimmer which gets through 12inch stumps easily Grin

but seriously dont you all get annoyed when you cant get into stuff or is it just me?

wait till xmas and you get tons of twiddly plastic wires holding all your dc pressies

iliketosleep · 10/10/2010 12:35

Ooooh those twiddly wires annoy me Angry

purplepeony · 10/10/2010 14:41

yes, it's annoying but what is more odd is that you waste even more of your time posting about in on MNS!

AnnoyingOrange · 10/10/2010 14:44

I use my poultry shears. They can cut through thick plastic.

roomonthebroom · 10/10/2010 15:37

Iliketosleep- it depends if the scissors come from Sainsburys. We got a caravan and I went to Sainsburys and bought the household essentials we needed, including kitchen scissors. When we got to the carvan I couldn't open the scissors because you needed scissors to open the packaging! DOH.
DH attacked the packaging with a knife, which of course slipped and he cut his finger- not badly but he is such a drama queen.

Packaging in general is annoying so YANBU OP!

iliketosleep · 10/10/2010 15:49

Oh dear Grin I tend to use my biggest kitchen knife and saw away from the side, still bloody annoying though Hmm

This thread has reminded me that I NEED to find the scissors that have somehow gone walkies in preporation for xmas morning...joy.....Confused

deaddei · 10/10/2010 15:54

It's like opening electric tootbrushes...ridiculous.
Definitely NBU.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/10/2010 16:31

Complain. If everyone complained to the retailer and the manufacturer then they would do something about it.

My brother was telling me a couple of Christmases ago that one of the toy shops here in Ireland had so many complaints about packaging that they insisted the manufacturers change it by the following Christmas or it wouldn't be stocked in their shop. The manufacturers changed their packaging.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 10/10/2010 16:54

Waves to Blondes - you have very right to be totally pissed off and deffo NBU!

DH once sawed away at printer ink cartridges encased in this stiff plastic stuff, with a very large and fierce looking kitchen knife, which slipped and he sawed away at his other hand. Twas a messy end.

choccyp1g · 10/10/2010 16:55

Last time I bought some overpackaged Cr*p, I actually went as far as asking for a scissors in the shop, and breaking open the packaging and leaving it behind. The staff did not seem at all surprised, so I think I was not the first. Trouble was, they then threw ALL the packing in the bin, whereas I would have carefully separated the cardboard for recycling. So I still felt cross. The shops and councils are pushing recycling, but it should be actually be the last option, not the first. Most of this stuff doesn't need any packaging

Remember the mantra for everything you buy.
Reject
Reduce
Repair
Re-use
Recycle

RatherBeOnThePiste · 10/10/2010 17:02

You are right choccyp1g - because when we buy the ink cartridges from Amazon, they come just in their cardboard packaging, but when you buy them in PC heinous World they come encased in bullet proof packaging!

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/10/2010 17:02

bob the builder says

reduce,reuse,recycle Grin

simple plastic bag/cardboard would have been fine - let alone the HUGE box they sent it in - would have managed to get 20 of my battery chargers in it

and the wires they use to tie toys are worse as you def cant cut those and you spend hours untwisting them off back of toys

we had a barbie doll the other week and she had a loop round her neck (understandable) Wink and then one round her waist,1 round her thighs and 2 on feet and 2 on hands so 7 loops - its not as if she was likely to escape to go and find ken rofl

RatherBeOnThePiste - I know exactly what you are talking about. The well known supermarket that begins with T and ends in O uses the same bullet-proof packaging on packs of nicotine replacement lozenges. Not very helpful when you have that urge for a ciggie and need the entire contents of your DH's toolbox & garden shed to get into them.

As far as toy packaging is concerned - totally, totally unnecessary. Friends of ours who have very young children actually unpacked every toy (including presents from relatives) on Xmas Eve, took all the wires & mini screws off, put in batteries where necessary, repackaged & gift wrapped the toys - just to avoid having to deal with them on Xmas morning ! Grin

MummyDoIt · 10/10/2010 17:35

I bought a tub of face cream once. It was packaged in a robust, rigid plastic tub anyway but the manufacturer had felt the need to put the tub in a cardboard box and then the cardboard box in a clear plastic box.

iliketosleep · 10/10/2010 18:00

Jazzchickens thats a brilliant idea!!!

Hassled · 10/10/2010 18:02

I was to be found stabbing a plastic wrapped box of printer cartridges with a screwdriver in a desperate bid to break through the plastic only this afternoon. You're right, it's bloody annoying.

katkouta · 10/10/2010 18:23

When I read your OP I immediately thought of Grin

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/10/2010 10:12

katkouta - i LOVE it and yes that was EXCALTY how i was yesterday - the same kind of plastic - grrrrrrrrrrr
