ok,had building and contents insurance for the last 20yrs with about 3 different companys (not at same time)anyway i commited an offence and was charged last december (was for assault.

i know i made a huge mistake and took the punishment non custodial, first offence ever, anyway household insurance was up for renewal have never made any claim in 20yrs and was told after i told them about conviction that they would not renewaL

thought i would be now a higher risk and premiums would go up but not totally refused,no fraud committed

anyway tried price comparrason site 79 insurance companys would not insure me,done a bit of research and found out that any conviction for anybody living in your home needs to be declared and probably insurrance withdrawn or refused,by that token there must be loads of people who dont realise this and if they claim and get found out no payout

have since found insurance through the CO-OP cant praise them high enough and not for much more

i can also see why some people dont bother to get insured

so anyway AIBU to be peed of that i was refused by so many insurance companys

I don't understand why thumping someone makes you a higher risk for having your roof blown off in a storm.

Linnet · 09/10/2010 21:12

When exactly did your insurance company ask you if you had a conviction?
I always just get a letter through saying your insurance has been renewed.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 09/10/2010 21:13

i dont get why a conviction would have anything to do with insurance - very strange!

nancydrewrocked · 09/10/2010 21:15

hecate I believe the reason that insurance companies wont insure those with previous convictions is twofold:

  1. If they have a conviction, even if it is not for an offence of dishonesty they are considered to be more likely to be dishonest and lie in relation to a claim.

  2. If tehy ahve a conviction they are considered to be more likely to mix with other people woth convictions who in turn could criminally damage the property/steal from it etc.

hi,didnt get that either about what that has to do with my home,im assuming that as you are a criminal you will then be into everything

linnet i looked at my policy details as had heard about this, since found out it is youur responsibility to tell them of any convictions wether it says on documents or not

this has all been a real eye-opener and im sure so many people dont realise and are not really insured but think they are

I've just looked a couple of insurance companies up online, the get quote page, including my home insurer and it does say it! I'm astounded I really am. They make assumptions when offering you insurance and one of them is that you don't have a conviction.
I've had contents insurance for almost 20 years and I never knew this.

theywillgrowup · 09/10/2010 21:26

yeah was pretty shocking and dont think its that well known

trouble is ok im maybe a higher risk, but what about somebody clean slate takes in a friend with a conviction either dosent know about it or dosent realise you have to tell insurance company,so they cant win if they claim they wont pay out,if they renewal it will get refused
