to think that freezer draws should be made from something more suitable than plastic?

It drives me mad! Mine are all cracked and broken. Frozen peas escaping everywhere. Door won't shut properly.

There must be something better out there. Silicone? Metal? Wood?! Am I being unreasonable to expect some sciencey person to invent something specifically for this purpose.

Grrrrrrrr.

Aaaaaah! Drawers not draws. I'm annoying myself now...

Ice maybe?

nickelbabe · 09/10/2010 17:03

i agree - they need to work out a plastic that isn't brittle when frozen. (or when pulled when the frost makes the drawer stick)

TiggyD · 09/10/2010 17:04

Ivory?

Mouseface · 09/10/2010 17:05

Nope, YADNBU.

When we moved house 2 years ago, DH chilled a bottle of wine to celebrate by sticking it in the freezer.

He forgot about it (der) and it exploded, smashing the drawer to pieces!!

Said freezer was 2 weeks old.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 09/10/2010 17:08

I agree - also the fridge door, the bit that holds bottles, why is that made from the same said flimsy plastic that breaks and is now redundant, leaving no room for my sodding milk!

Glitterknickaz · 09/10/2010 17:14

Problem is wood isn't suitable and metal could cause ice burns.... there isn't really anything else is there?

Chil1234 · 09/10/2010 17:14

Plastic keeps the cost down.... You could always buy replacement drawers. Google your freezer model and you'd be surprised what spare parts you can get your hands on!

rastababi · 09/10/2010 17:18

YANBU, 2 out of our 3 draws don't even have that bit of plastic anymore, it's all been smashed off during my vigorous attempts to fill the freezer Blush

ThatDamnDog · 09/10/2010 17:32

DRAWERS!

As you were :)

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 09/10/2010 17:33

YANBU. My freezer drawers are cracked and bite me.

Cartoose · 09/10/2010 17:36

YANBU. My top freezer drawer is broken right on the handle bit. The sharp broken bit gets my hands every time. Ow.

PlanetEarth · 09/10/2010 17:46

Mouseface, hee hee. (I guess since it's two years ago you can now see the funny side...)

And yes, freezer drawers are rubbish! Mine bite me too.

olderandwider · 09/10/2010 18:47

I had a Gaggenau freezer for 18 years. The plastic drawers never broke. Quality, see?

When the freezer croaked, I bought a Miele. It's about 2 years old and so far the drawers are fine but it does feel less solid than the dear departed Gaggy.

Mouseface · 09/10/2010 18:51

PlanetEarth - I saw the funny side that night to be fair to DH.

You see he is Frank Spencer II Grin

Thandeka · 09/10/2010 18:57

I googled replacement drawers for our buggered ones -£30 f-ing quid each!? I think not- the fridge was free (family upgrade), not spending £90 on drawers!

Yadnbu however a chest freezer may be a worthwhile investment ( we also have one) as much more economical to run and no drawer issue, cept tis a bugger to find anything in it!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 09/10/2010 19:02

I have just shelled out £50 for 3 new drawers for my freezer, it is beautiful though it has a water dispenser and everyhting... Grin

KatyMac · 09/10/2010 19:06

I use those big blue bags from Tesco in my chest freezer to keep different foods together

bronze · 09/10/2010 19:06

Mine arent broken they just don't stay attached. So I have a pile of drawer fronts on the fridge and stuff that falls out everytime I open the door

SweetnessAndShite · 09/10/2010 20:57

Yeah, we did have a chest freezer before this one but you can't store things on top of it Grin

What miracle substance do you suggest?

JellyBelly10 · 10/10/2010 10:42

My freezer drawers are made of coated wire baskets if you see what I mean, so nothing to shatter or crack...however, the annoying thing is that anything small like a spilt bag of peas for example falls straight through and ends up in every drawer on the way down and in a heap at the bottom!

SweetnessAndShite · 10/10/2010 19:24

Would silicone work? I have no idea as I'm not really a science person.

Heracles - no suggestions. I would like someone to specifically design something for this purpose. AIBU?

I was wondering why the fronts couldn't just be made out of the coated wire like the rest of the drawer. JellyBelly has answered my question.

I give up!
