AIBU about a quote from the decorator? Should I pay extra £30?

I'll try to keep it brief.

We decide to have some decorating done. I get 3 guys in to quote, like bloke no 3 comes across well he verbally quotes within price range of the other 2 so my mind is pretty much made up. I get the written quote and it is ever so slightly higher, not enough to quibble so ring immediately to book him in.

Then I do a bit of googling and the paint he is using is cheaper than the other 2. So now I'm thinking he's a bit pricier - only £9 to nearest other quote but the paint is cheaper so I give him a call within a day to say I was a bit hasty booking straight away and can I discuss with DH as he has been away for a couple of nights? I was honest with him, didn't mess about just said I wanted to talk over with DH.

We had a good chat and he knocked £30 off the price said he wanted to do the job.

So then I fill DH in and he says the guy is just trying to earn a decent wage he was competitive he will feel demoralised at being knocked down in price we should be prepared to pay his original quote. I should call back Monday and tell him he can do the job forget about the £30 off.

I didn't call and demand a lower price or else I would take the job somewhere else we had a civilised conversation he offered to take off £30. The paint is cheaper at the end of the day.

So, AIBU to take the £30 discount taking into account I did verbally accept him doing the job?

Don't say anything. If you like his work give him the £30 at the end.

Yes that did cross my mind it's not as if he's going to do a bad job because of the price difference is it?

Would you prefer the more expensive paint? If so, you could always say if he uses that you'll pay the extra £30..

I'd say can you change the paint to xx and we'll keep to the original price

Keep the £30 in your own pocket..he can obviously afford to knock the £30 off or he wouldn't have done it in the first place. Its a business transaction, he obviously wants the work.
Good luck as we have never been able to find any decent decorators who dont splash paint over the floors or miss bits off completely!!
