Where do we stand on horse shit ?

Obviously owners are meant to pick up after their dogs but our local pavement on the way to the shops, so we are not talking the depths of the countryside here is covered in horse shite. I thought I'd avoided it but I have it on the buggy wheels and was very upset to discover it's in my house.
Surely the fouling laws apply to horse owners too (are they even meant to be on the pavement) ? Just in case I catch one in the act.

Hmm! As a pony owner, I'd say they should be on the road, but as already pointed out, I would walk a child and a pony on the pavement. If I was leading though, I'd then sweep it into the gutter with my foot. I can't honestly say I do this if I was aboard! I second mentioning it to the culprit (nicely). Although once they decide to go, there's not much stopping them! Grin

Interestng question. Farmers by law now have to clean manure and soil off roads if they leaving and entering fields on to the public highway.

Not sure what level of fouling is acceptable. Personally, I could live with any amount of horse manure but no amount of dog poo I really cant stand.

Where? Well, the farmyard would be a good place.

Although if you don't mind me saying, it doesn't sound like much of a day out. Have you thought about Legoland?

Was regularly mightily pissed off with horses crapping on the bike path. Ride in it, wheel bike inside et voila, house smells like a barn. Thanks evil ponies.

Horses aren't allowed on the pavement. However, on a short dangerous bit of road the police will often turn a blind eye. It's difficult because if you don't have horses it's easy to assume that people are riding on roads (and pavements) for the fun of it, and should be riding in the many fields that are often nearby. The reality is that riders would much rather be in fields, but they are often forced to do roadwork to get to bridleways. Stray along the edge of a field and you will be chased by an irate farmer. I am surrounded by fields that I'm not allowed to ride round where I keep my horses.
So, horse poo on the pavement, I think the rider should dismount and kick it in the road (if they realise it's happened of course). If they aren't able to get on and off their horse without the aid of a mounting block, then they should "suck it up" and ride on the road. Because they shouldn't be on the pavement in the first place, and it's a courteous thing to do. Horse poo on the road I don't have a problem with personally. That's just my personal opinion.

Thanks for this thread! We live in an area with lots of tarmaced footpaths which lead onto a series of woodland pathways - all v v nice - which are ridden on by horse riders. Lovely to watch until one of the horses does a great steaming pile right in the middle of the tarmaced footpath. When you realise that you've got to go through it with the pram, cos there's no room either side of it, or the kids have walked through it, you get kind of pissed off.
