To be this out of touch

I keep wondering what the kids are into today...each generation has it's "thing" right? The 70s had disco and punk..the 80s had Goths and New Wave and towards the end they had rave...which went on well into the 90s.

What do they do these days? Confused

I know they have Emo's but does that even have a "scene"? What else is there? What about the whole desperation to be famous thing...which seems to have infected a whole generation...is that now a "Scene" in itself?

Just wondering....some of you must have teens....I don't, mine are little and I am as old as the sea....[ancient face]

Lol....I am quizzing slightly because tis' pertinent to something I'm working on...might be better off going on some teen site...but would feel odd...like an old Aunty asking embarrasing questions!

I have a teen DD but she's a self confessed nerd so is also out of touch.

Innit, blud.

IMoveTheStars · 08/10/2010 20:22

stressheaderic · 08/10/2010 20:26

DP said to me t'other day "Who are the Kardashians?" to which I replied, "dunno, do they live down our road?"
He informed me they are on TV but we still don't know who, what or why.

I am 30, he is 35 - we are like a pair of OAPs sometimes though.

cyborg · 08/10/2010 20:28

i don't think any generation has been fully behind any one given musical style. You give the examples of disco and punk, but punk was never mainstream and even disco was only to a certain taste. Same could be said of goth, new wave and rave.
as far as I can tell, the kids are into the same thing as ever- a diverse set of things. granted, it's easier to find your thing when it's so freely available.

ValentinCrimble · 08/10/2010 22:29

No but I'm not looking for mainstream...I just want examples of something as "strong" as the given examples....when I say strong I mean a culture or subgroup with a particular ethos, way of dressing, music and so on.

Valentin - I saw a lot of committed people dressed in pink or with pink hair for Breast Cancer week? (at least I assume it was BC week)

But yes, I know what you mean. There are far few identifiable teens around. London is much more interesting though, Home Counties are full of uggs and straightened hair Wink

Portofino · 09/10/2010 00:49

I was inspired by this thread to look at the current top 40

I was glad to see Enrique in there(twice) and Kylie is obviously still strutting her stuff - same age as me Kylie - but never even heard of any of the others! Shock

IMoveTheStars · 09/10/2010 00:57

erk.. there's one called 'Labrinth'

[hiss]

FFS, at least spell it correctly.

fastedwina · 09/10/2010 01:09

know it's bad when I leaf through OK and don't know who any of the 'celebs' are!

IMoveTheStars · 09/10/2010 01:15

what's 'OK'?

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns · 09/10/2010 01:16

im 22, a bit out of touch since the dcs appeared BUT, have some immature friends online so im asking them.

so far, we have emos, 'emotional rockers' black eyeliner, converse, skinny jeans, like my chemical romance, bullet for my valentine and so on. seen lurking in large groups at the park, claiming to self harm and be tragic, but arent, usually rich spoilt kids tryna piss of mummy and daddy.

Chavs- found outside mcds, in sports wear. listen to ndubz out loud on their mobiles, nuff said.

i think most of them are too pissed to manage much more than that im afraid

IMoveTheStars · 09/10/2010 01:19

tryna??? [pulls face]

IMoveTheStars · 09/10/2010 01:19

and don't underestimate the dedication of teens to the cause

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns · 09/10/2010 01:26

i copied and pasted friends response, not my bizare non word i can assure you.

LacksDaisies · 09/10/2010 01:32

feeling like a bit of an old fogie myself these days too, but am 41 so it's to be expected.

I had a theory (based entirely on my Dad's outrageous "that's not music, it's just noise" bellows during ToTP in the 80s) that when you have kids things become very little kid centric and what you would normally be spending on music, would go on lego and other plastic tat and then before you knew it you would have a teenager and you wouldn't know what was what.

I was determined, when I had my DS1 eight years ago, that that wouldn't happen to me, and kept up pretty well (I thought). Since having another two DC in the last three years though, it's all slipped a bit. Went in to HMV the other day and was completely lost; never mind the fact I was in there was to look for the fecking Zingzillas CD Blush

How the feck I'll cope when DS1 (who isn't interested in music at all) is a teenager, I just don't know. It scares me!

mountainmonkey · 09/10/2010 10:02

Ah yes, plenty of emos and chavs around here! Never heard of dubstep though Hmm
