to think that if I give a friend some hand-me-downs, she shouldn't be selling them on ebay

She's not that broke - just very thrifty. But to be honest, if she doesn't want/need them I had rather expected she would pass them on to some one else.

And she was totally serious! All was well in the end because I gave my sister all the baby stuff I had (my DD is exactly 9 months older than her DD), but it was still a Shock that anyone could be so cheeky!

If she'd donated it all to a refuge or whatever, my sister said she wouldn't have minded half as much but it was selling it for her own gain, knowing there was another baby on its way.

BuckBuckMcFate · 08/10/2010 14:38

norflondoner and terryble, that is it exactly. I did the same as DD grew and gave a friend a load of DD's clothes (only girl in family of boys, lots of over excited grandparents gifts etc). I gave her some really lovely stuff in great condition and I looked forward to seeing her DD in them too.

She never wore any of them and then ebayed them (lots were Humphrey's Corner stuff too which for some reason seems to hold its value) and the whole thing left a nasty taste in my mouth.

yanbu, totally bad manners imo.

Knickers0nMyHead · 08/10/2010 14:41

I once did this with some toys I had been given, as we desperately needed some cash Blush

frogetyfrog · 08/10/2010 14:43

I live in fear of doing this - but car booting, not ebaying. The problem is I forget what we have been given and what we bought. It all just gets taken to car boot.

Meglet · 08/10/2010 14:43

YANBU.

I think it's very bad form to sell on hand-me-down clothes.

You can't stop her from doing it but she's taking the piss a bit.

I sometimes get lovely GAP / mini-mode hand me downs that I could shift at NCT sale or e-bay but I wouldn't dream of it. They all get sent to the charity shop or a friend that needs them.

Morally it's dodgy. She shouldn't profit from your kindness.

Knickers - desperately needing the cash feels different to me. Not sure I would mind so much in that case (would still feel a bit sad that (the dc didn't get a chance to use the items).

Frogety - its a bit different if the items are sold long after they've been passed on. I'm sure you would remember them if there were only given to you 3 weeks ago and your dc had never even worn or played with them.

cat64 - not going to give her any more - although a bit temped to pass over a bag of stained and unsellable items Grin
The sad bit is that I really hoped her dc would enjoy them etc etc.
