I've found a wallett

I've gone through it hoping to find an name, a phone number or even a bank card but there's nothing except one thousand pounds in cash.

I've called the police and told them what I've found and where and that I'll drop it in later today but I feel a bit nervous even having it in my bag.

Oooh. hope you get a reward for your honesty.
I doubt you've got anything to worry about. Bag robbers won't know if you've got 1000 pounds or 2p.

dilemma456 · 07/10/2010 11:22

You're probably right Kreecher. Police said that much money with no id etc. is often drugs money which makes me even more nervous for no sensible reason at all

Bloody hell. Who carries a wallet with £1000 in cash? Wow.

hope you get a reward for your honesty Smile

marriednotdead · 07/10/2010 11:43

I hope you feel great for handing it in.

Good karma dictates that either the person will be extremely happy that you are honest. And possibly reward you with more than 'thank you'.
Or that they don't claim within the allotted time (usually 6 weeks) and it becomes yours. Smile

Ninjacat · 07/10/2010 11:45

Would it be harsh to say "if you can afford to loose £1000 you probably don't need it"?
I know I'd keep that kind of money pretty safe. Grin

of course it could be a little old ladies life savings or a very clumsy pickpocket

DirtyMartini · 07/10/2010 11:46

Shock wow.

nocake · 07/10/2010 11:54

It's mine. If you tell me where to collect it from I'll pop round.

earthworm · 07/10/2010 11:54

When you hand it in the police will ask you to fill out a form and, if no one claims it within a month, it's yours.

melikalikimaka · 07/10/2010 11:56

You know you probably won't hear a thing about it after you have handed it in, don't you?

TrillianAstra · 07/10/2010 11:57

Make sure it is written down that you found it - it's very unlikely that anyone will claim it and then you'll get to keep it yippee!

(would not be going yippee if I thought someone needed it but an unidentifiable wallet with £1000 in cash is unlikely to belong to someone who needs the money to feed their kids, is it?)

ornamentalcabbage · 07/10/2010 12:00

Good for you handing it in. I found one at a shopping centre with £50,but the owner had left her driving licence in it, so I tapped the postcode into my satnav and delivered it to her door. She was very shocked, then later tracked me down and gave me a very expensive bottle of wine.

madonnawhore · 07/10/2010 12:01

You didn't need to call the police, if you find cash and there's no way of identifying who it belongs to then you're legally allowed to keep it.

If there's no ID or phone number or anything, then it's yours.

NordicPrincess · 07/10/2010 12:03

its not always drug money, it might be someone whos withdrawn 1000 for a deposit or something, love the way the police think the worst.

Id have kept it

dilemma456 · 07/10/2010 12:05

Wouldn't be able to live with myself Madonna, it MAY belong to someone who needed that much cash for a special purpose.

OP posts:
Ragwort · 07/10/2010 12:06

Madonna - you may be legally allowed to keep it (although I am not sure about that) - but how would you feel morally about keeping something that isn't your's?

FiveOrangePips · 07/10/2010 12:14

I would have to hand it in. A lot of elderly people might have that kind of money and not have it in the bank/ be going to put it in the bank (some people do keep bank cards separate from their wallet).

I would feel very uncomfortable keeping it, even after it went to the police station and it wasn't claimed. I know I would get my knickers in a twist about it.

You have done the right thing dilemma, why is this in aibu?

FoghornLeghorn · 07/10/2010 12:17
Hmm
PurplePillow · 07/10/2010 12:22

Actually Madonna you are wrong about it being legal to keep unidentifiable money.

There was a case locally where a thief stole a substantial amount of money and the police stated that if a person found it and did NOT hand it in to them then they were liable to prosecution.

If it is drug money there is no way they will claim it, so when the time is up spoil yourself and your family with it, at least then it will have done some good iyswim Grin

If you don't feel able to do that then donate it to charity Grin

ragged · 07/10/2010 12:23

Good for you, Dilemma.

proudnglad · 07/10/2010 12:37

What's a 'wallett'?

I'd scoop up all the cocaine on the notes and sell it on street corners as this is clearly drug money.

5inthebed · 07/10/2010 12:40

Well done for handing it in. I'd have done the same, and then called back in a months time hoping nobody had claimed it. Grin

stillfrazzled · 07/10/2010 12:45

My grandmother (90 at the time) went out shopping to buy an outfit for my wedding with £600 in her purse (not v mobile, also has that old person thing of keeping loads of cash around instead of trusting banks).

She dropped it - which was when we found out how much she'd been carrying Shock. We never found it, no-one handed it in. She was incredibly distressed.

It's not always drug money and I think you're fab for wanting to do the right thing. Hope you are rewarded in some way.

vintage4 · 07/10/2010 12:46

proudnglad feel better now? Hmm

squirrel42 · 07/10/2010 12:50

I was once cycling behind someone who had a pannier on the back of his bike, and it fell off as he went around a corner. I stopped and picked it up, then tried to catch up but he was too far gone by then. The bag turned out to have his wallet, phone, house keys, work pass and goodness knows what else in. I tried a few people on his mobile contact list and left messages saying I was taking the bag to the police station - thankfully before I got there he worked out he'd lost it and borrowed someone else's phone to call his, so I arranged to hand it back to him that evening. Losing all that stuff would have been a major bummer - can't get in your house, no money, no phone, work security issues...
