... or is DD BU about selfishness on buses?

If I get on a bus alone and there is a spare two-seat, I'll sit in it (window side) - as will pretty much everyone else who gets on a bus alone in my experience.

If I get on a bus with DD, and it is half full of people all sitting alone in two-seats, she gets annoyed because we can't sit together.

I've explained to her that if you got on a less than half full bus and you sat next to someone when there were empty two-seats available, they would think you were some kind of weirdo/space invader. But I also think she has a point.

So is either of us BU?

Sorry it's a bit of a tame AIBU (and it's my first) but I'm interested in what people think.

I regularly get the bus and like any normal person, sit in the free two seater rather than have to sit next to another human being...imagine.

I do feel bad when I see a parent and child get on board and they can't sit together, I'll sometimes move.

I often move if I am on a train journey if I see two people travelling together and who would obviously rather sit with one another (whether they are parent and child or mates) just because it's nice.

Definitely a strict bus code where I live, as follows:

  1. Get on bus, swipe card while subtly checking out seat situation.
  1. If two-seaters still available, pick one. It is essential that the seat chosen is furthest away from all other people on the bus
  1. Only when all the two-seaters are occupied by one person is it acceptable to sit next to a stranger.
  1. The back row has an etiquette all of its own. First two people take the window seats. Third person takes middle seat. Only once all other seats on bus are occupied should the second and fourth seats on the back row be occupied (unless you are sitting as a group). Sitting in these seats prior to full-bus occupation is a serious busiquette faux pas.

And wow betide anyone who doesn't follow The Rules. Grin

  1. IF no double seats available identify the 55 yr old woman who has just put her bag on the seat next to her to stop you sitting there and ask her to move it so you can sit down meanwhile enjoying the look of annoyance on her face. Better still put your DC in the seat next to her. Grin

Our buses have one area for buggies. We know it is for buggies because it has a massive sticker above it saying "For parents with buggies". Then there is the wheelchair space with the proper padded seat rest which has a massive sticker above it saying "For wheelchair users"

Scroobius, I am reliably informed that there is a very similar code of practice in men's toilets when picking a urinal Grin

Scroobius, you've pretty much nailed it there.
