AIBU to imagine that by the time most of the young now retire state pension will not be available or available only to some? What do you think?

I think that the state pension will remain but that its purchasing power will diminish over time. The age at which people qualify is already going to rise. I think more people will be encouraged to opt out of the state pension with incentives like tax breaks on private pension contributions and there may even be some element of compulsion brought in if not enough people go for it voluntarily. Those who don't have enough to live on once they retire will qualify for top-ups via Pension Credits or similar.

i'm 34 now and i'm not betting on a state pension that will buy anything.

Just for reference. The single person full state pension at the moment is £97.65/week.... just over £5k a year.

Its also contributory - so not everyone gets it anyway if they don't have NI contributions.
That's why a lot of pensioners are on benefits.
