I believe benefits should be there to help people that NEED help to maintain basic living standards.

AIBU to think that you don't need benefits if you can afford any of the following:

Fags
Alcohol
Plasma tv
Holidays

Also, what would you add to this list?

Although tbh right now I'm going stark raving mad with insomnia - but that's beside the point - thank f*ck for my fags and computer to keep me company,

MsBehaved · 06/10/2010 02:08

I am a LP and have been on benefits for a while (thought am just about to start back at work) and the area I lived in has mad a huge difference. When I lived in a town and could walk to the shop I always felt as though I had plenty of disposable income. I didn't smoke or drink and so I would save my money and have days out with my son to farms etc.

But now I live completely in the sticks and the nearest shop is 5 miles, I rarely buy anything other than essentials and I keep having to extent my overdraft just to survive. I still don't smoke and drink yet I never seem to be able to buy anything nice for my son!
I bet this makes you feel very happy?!!

MaMoTTaT · 06/10/2010 02:09

oh yes the club card vouchers are great aren't they - I used quite a few of those when i was away with the boys.

FunkyCherry · 06/10/2010 02:14

I've already admitted to being unreasonable.

I was feeling grouchy about money when I posted.

I will now remove my judgy pants if they're not stuck up my arse with my head. Blush

YABU

We lived on JSA for a year and a half when my husband was let go from his previous job. We managed to get a flatscreen TV off ebay and after saving for about 3 months! Also the same applied when we went on holiday in June although saved for more along the lines of 6 months.

They want to get people of the dole and into work but they don't make it easy.

DH started his new job 6 weeks ago and from the day he signed off it is our responsibilty to pay £500 rent, £95 council tax, on top of all other bills. He works for £6 an hour and picks up around £230 a week after tax and NI.

I have had to borrow the rent money from my dad and by the time it is paid back it will be due again. Therefore putting us straight into the shit, then they wonder WHY people DONT want to work!! Hmm

AMumInScotland · 06/10/2010 10:20

Back when means testing of benefits really meant means testing, my great-grandparents were told they wouldn't be getting any dole money because they had 3 chairs in their living room, and there were only 2 adults living in the house. They would have to sell what they didn't really need and live off that money before they would be eligible for a handout from the state.

Ah, the good old days eh!

MaMoTTaT · 06/10/2010 10:36

absolutely hey AMIS. Lets kick 'em when they're really down and make them sell anything that isn't deemed neccesary before supporting them.

Iliketosleep - have you checked that to see if you're entitled to any HB still?

cupcakesandbunting · 06/10/2010 10:40

OP you were kind of right in your first post except "alcohol" needs to be stipulated; pinot grigio/merlot fine, bloo WKD/Scrumpy Jack not ok.

MaMoTTaT · 06/10/2010 10:42

oh but WKD blue is fab!

bumpsoon · 06/10/2010 10:47

Pets ! i dont see why my hard earned taxes should pay to feed some scroungers baby eating pitbull or goldfish Wink

bumpsoon · 06/10/2010 10:48

although i wouldnt mind if they had a donkey

MaMoTTaT · 06/10/2010 10:53

well yes they are making a bit of an ass for the system aren't they by having all these luxuries Grin

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 06/10/2010 10:53

bumpsoon, I just read your name as bumspoon!!

That's all i will be adding today! I may just go back to bed!

cupcakesandbunting · 06/10/2010 11:01

They should be encouraged to keep a donkey as a pet in fact. They can use it as transport as well as a way of getting all the turkey twizzlers and hydrogenated pigs bumholes back from Iceland.

I am off to petition Dave for Donkeys for the Poor...

cupcakesandbunting · 06/10/2010 11:01

Donkeys 4 Doleys

Has more of a ring to it Grin

MaMoTTaT · 06/10/2010 11:04

asses for arses???

oh no - then we'd need to give them to the MP's as well wouldn't we Grin

Glitterknickaz · 06/10/2010 11:11

I've got a fucking huge HD ready telly. Cost a good couple of grand new.

Only I didn't buy it. My brother is a bit of a gadget lover, upgraded it to an even huger telly and gave it to me for free Grin

I need booze to stay sane when I've had a bad day!

MustHaveaVeryShortMemory · 06/10/2010 11:11

Children, they should be for higher earners only. Perhaps just bankers.

cupcakesandbunting · 06/10/2010 11:12
