bigchris · 03/10/2010 21:33

Bless her, where's she going?

LittleMissHissyFit · 03/10/2010 21:35

they'll keep an eye on her, please don't worry!

emkana · 03/10/2010 21:47

going to Germany to stay with a friend! I will worry the whole time she's away I think - she will be much more independent in Germany as well, because the friend and her will be allowed to go out in the village by themselves.

Sorry gah ?

emkana · 03/10/2010 22:11

gah - "an interjection denoting frustration or excitement" (according to urban dictionary)

in this case denoting mild panic!

don't worry. I sent ds off when he was five to Canada. I was in pieces. He was fine. Coddled and petted by adoring cabin staff.

cumfy · 03/10/2010 22:13

Thanks! Hope she enjoys the adventure :)

ja9 · 03/10/2010 22:13

when is she going? have you just seen the news? put we're meant to be going to france next week and it's put the fear in me...

JeezyPeeps · 03/10/2010 22:14

I guess it depends where you live, and how far away the aeroplane will be diverted if need be.

Personally I wouldn't put my child unaccompanied on a flight because I live on an island, so if in the event that the plane can't land here they can end up somewhere that I won't be able to get to and they will have to stay in a hotel with a stranger (cabin crew).

If you live on mainland uk this is less likely to be a problem as you will be able to get to, say, london from birmingham reasonably easily.

It isn't a problem for the vast majority of flights though.

emkana · 03/10/2010 22:16

Yes felt even worse after seeing the news Shock

dd is so excited!

dss has flown as an unaccompanied minor since age 7. The cabin crew don't take their eyes off him from the moment we (or his mum) hand him over to when he is deposited with us (or her).

Hes now 12 and can fly on his own and misses the attention!

SnailWhaleTail · 03/10/2010 22:45

I flew to Spain alone when I was 8. It was fab, everyone was really kind and the cabin crew showed me everything I was supposed to do.

What a fun adventure for her.

OohIsThatAFlake · 03/10/2010 23:06

Isle of Man, JeezyPeeps?

frikonastick · 04/10/2010 06:57

i flew as an unaccompanied minor from about 7. making connecting flights in different countries and everything. at least 3 times a year. for about 9 years. thats alot of flying!

never came to any harm. they watch you like hawks! and often you arent the only minor flying so you get some company. and most airports have unaccomanied minor 'lounges' sometimes just an office where they put you if you have a delay or a wait between flights so you cant just wander around.

AND (much to my horror) they make you wear this feck off huge thing around your neck so everyone knows you are not allowed to free range.....

she will be fine for sure. Smile

proudnglad · 04/10/2010 07:02

I flew as an accompanied minor to Italy at 9. Had a ball! Was looked after by lovely stewardess (sorry, flight atttendant!) and felt v grown up and excited.

Don't worry (I would too though!) x

emkana · 04/10/2010 10:35

MIL, however, is not happy at all!

LilRedWG · 04/10/2010 13:10

She is not MIL's child - she is yours and you know her best. She'll have such a great experience.

ShrinkingViolet · 04/10/2010 13:22

DD2 loved flying as an UM - they fed her endless kitkats all flight.

MaudOHara · 04/10/2010 13:26

She'll love it

stleger · 04/10/2010 13:31

My ds went to Holland when he was ten, his nine year old friend came here to Ireland. it was uneventful! Your dd will be fine.

BigOfNoorks · 04/10/2010 13:46

She will be fine I was 8 first time I got to sit by a air hostess and see in the cockpit. I also felt very grown up and mature I had great stories to tell my friends Grin

hatwoman · 04/10/2010 13:51

not only will she be fine - it's a brilliant opportunity for her.
