Tell me if you think this is...

Black crochet lacey type top, denim shorts/black tights (but like 10 denier that you can see the skin through rather than woolen or opaque)/knee high black boots with a heel.

DD had her first "school" birthday party this afternoon (she's just started in reception) and while most girls were dressed in similar, sparkly party dresses and little jewelled ballet pumps, this girl was clopping round in knee-high boots. She does look much older than the rest. If she wasn't in DD's class then I would put her at about 7. But even so, she is 4, and not due to turn 5 until june of next year. I don't really like the whole mumsnet judgey pants type thing. But every time I saw this girl clopping past I just couldn't stop thinking how inappropriately dressed she was.

What do you think?

I guess its all down to personal taste.
Hmm

dilemma456 · 01/10/2010 21:24

Don't like seeing small children in heels myself.

However, I suppose its up to her mum but I certainly would dress my 4 year old dd in what you describe

Skyrg · 01/10/2010 21:24

This thread could blow up Grin.

My rule for children's clothing (don't have kids yet btw) is if it restricts their movement beyond what's normal for clothes, it's inappropriate. Children should be running around, not worrying about breaking their heels or ripping their tights.

CarmenSanDiego · 01/10/2010 21:25

Why does it bother you so much? I can see that the shoes weren't necessarily comfortable if she really was 'clopping' but shorts, tights and lacey top? No problem.

Should we all dress our children the same?

laweaselmys · 01/10/2010 21:27

It's not great. If there were no heels and the tights were thicker I would say better...

I wouldn't say it was worryingly bad.

Anenome · 01/10/2010 21:35

Well what's your point in judging? The poor kid's Mum has bad taste but to come on here and bitch about the outfit of a 4 year old is in bad taste.

Hedgeblunder · 01/10/2010 21:35

I saw a little girl in a frog costume getting dragged round debenhams today, that was more unsuitable I think!

It doesn't bother me that much. I'm not bitching about it. I was merely posting an opinion. And I didn't say the mum had bad taste (you did). I just thought it seemed inappropriate. She was definitely clopping around a lot, not because she was uncomfortable, but cos she was a 4yr old wearing heels and trying to act like Mummy. I just think it made her look and act older and she's 4 years old, and i felt sad.

It is absolutely mad. Who on earth would want what is basically a baby to look like a tart. It is very sad that people think it is all ok and that moral relativism rules

CarmenSanDiego · 01/10/2010 21:48

But it's your perception that the baby 'looks like a tart'

No. The 'baby' looks like a child in knee high boots, tights, shorts and a top. What values or meanings you attach to that depend entirely on your worldview.

Personally, it sounds like a funky, modern, fun sort of outfit. A little edgy. Especially when all the other children are wearing the same thing. I wouldn't attach any sexual meaning to it. You may think she looks 'like a tart' - fair enough.

deste · 01/10/2010 21:50

A paedofiles sp dream.

dolphin13 · 01/10/2010 21:53

Well each to their own but hell would freeze over before I dressed my dd like that that.

ravenAK · 01/10/2010 21:53

I don't like heels on little girls - they should be able to run around. Other than that, I don't see anything wrong with tights, etc.

jameelaq · 01/10/2010 21:55

I suppose so deste but I don't know what sp means.
Carmen, would you expect your bank manager to dress as a rabbit? or the checkout girl to dress as a fop? No you wouldn't because if they dressed like that your expectations of them would be different. So why think it is ok for a 4 year old to dress like a tart?
Where do you draw the line? An 8 year old in fetishgear?

Rollergirl1 · 01/10/2010 21:57

Carmen: No, see again you are putting words in my mouth. I didn't say, or think, she looked like a tart. I just think her clothes were too old for her. If a 12 year old were wearing them I wouldn't think anything of it. I wouldn't think she looked like a tart or that it had any sexual connotation atall. It's nothing to do with my "world view" What the fuck does that even mean?

Butterfly: My 2yr old DS loves wearing DD's heels too. And he's nifty.

OP posts:
deste · 01/10/2010 22:05

sp spelling.

Rollergirl1 · 01/10/2010 22:13

Okay, lets make it simple. For all mothers of girls under 5, would you dress your daughter during the day in clothes you might wear (or a 19yr old going clubbing) yourself to go out in the evening? I'm not talking funky tops and leggings combos? I mean heeled boots and denier tights and short shorts. Okay it's mainly the heels.

OP posts:
CarmenSanDiego · 01/10/2010 22:26

Rollergirl, I was addressing Jameelaq who did say the girl looked like a tart.

Jameelaq, I couldn't really care less what people wear. Plenty of bank staff around here have piercings and tats and checkout staff wear all KINDS of stuff, but I live in California Grin

And still disagree that she was 'dressed as a tart' - she was wearing shorts, a top and tights. Don't think I've seen actual prostitutes wearing that sort of outfit to be honest.

ravenAK · 01/10/2010 22:27

It was simple enough already!

Heels, no, impractical.

Denier tights, wouldn't buy them for a small girl, they'd get ripped. Waste of money.

That said, dd1 (4) has a couple of pairs - sparkly Hallowe'en ones (currently on sale in Sainsbos...), & handed down from a friend - I wouldn't think it inappropriate to dress her in them.

Short shorts - yes, no problem.

Would probably combine them with opaque tights & flats, though, for reasons above.

jameelaq · 01/10/2010 22:46

I'm sorry to have to say this Carmen and it is not really my personal opinion but it seems to be the received wisdom of the world that California has thae greatest number of fucked up people in the world (apart from Sudan of course) and it is possibly because of such moral relativism

DiscoSquish · 01/10/2010 22:50

Sounds awful to me, children should be children not mini adults worrying about what they look like :(

mumeeee · 01/10/2010 22:53

YANBU. That's the sort of outfit DD2 wears and she's 20!

CarmenSanDiego · 01/10/2010 22:56

Jameelaq. Mmmm... because rates of depression, suicide and mental illness are so good in the UK are they?

Really, what a silly comment.
