to think people should butt out

I just cgave the midwife a quick call for some advice because I had weird sudden swelling in my hand - and have had strange swelling in my feet the last week (kind of like stress balls, I can make marks in the swelling that stay there! Its quite different to my previous oedema but I wasnt too concerned, the hand just made me wonder if there was something else going on)

Midwife is going to call me back later this afternoon which is cool, but in the meantime to get a quick opinion, I asked one of the GP's on site to have a quick look (we have around 3 doctors and about 6 nurses)

He thinks its normal, listened to my symptoms etc and thinks the midwife will just call back and tell me to see a GP this week. Excellent. Everythings great.

But a woman who works here too, never been pregnant, not qualified like some of the other people that work here, just came over to us and kept saying 'Swelling is normal! Its normal! Its just your body reacting to being pregnant! Its totally normal! Stop fussing! Just drink some water! Everything is normal! My feet swell all the time!'

Am I right to think that not every level of swelling is normal, that its perfectly reasonable to simply call the midwife to check (or ask a doc on site to check), that pre-eclampsia is something pregnant women should be aware of incase it turns out not to be normal and thats this woman should eff off because some things cant be solved by drinking water!

Add to that, some others chirped in that stress causes pre-eclampsia, and that I would give it to myself if I continued worrying... When the doc explained thats not true, she kept saying 'But my feet swell all the time'

deep sigh

Maybe you go on and on about your pregnancy and people are fed up with you?

Iklboo · 30/09/2010 13:12

Tell her if she doesn't fooking shut up her gob will swell after you've cracked her in it

Or

Your feet swell cos you're fat

In my defence I am having a bad day and am therefore posting rants on here rather than lose the plot at work and get sacked.

If you allow people to overhear you on the phone to your midwife/doc/whatever then they're going to do the busybody thing. If you don't want moronic comments, keep your ailments very, very private.

memoo · 30/09/2010 13:13

Maybe she was just trying to stop you from worrying?

Mammie81 · 30/09/2010 13:14

She didnt hear me on the phone. She came over to where the doc was sat because she was bo doubt bored with her own work and saw some people chatting!

I hate people that think they know everything and just because you are pregnant, feel they can say something.

You could have any type of pre-existing condition. Ie diabetes

'My blood sugar is low, Im going into hypo!'
Her 'Its NORMAL! I get shaky when Ive not eaten too! Its noooooooormal' Grin

Mammie81 · 30/09/2010 13:28

Haha! She is one of those people Im afraid! Smile

Id like to think that Memoo, but it seemed more an attempt to cosy up to the said doctor.

And 'Its normal!' in your face is hardly calming.

Pitting oedema (which is what you have described) can be a sign of pre-eclampsia, I would be tempted to get your BP and wee checked, especially as the swelling's come on quickly, any headaches or visual disturbances?

Ignore the annoying 'know-it-all' colleague, not all swelling is normal in pregnancy!

woopsidaisy · 30/09/2010 13:49

I'm a nurese. After DS1 I developed oedema, about 4/5 months after.I felt very tired, shakey,no energy...sound familiar? Of course, because we all feel like that after a baby, right? I eventually went to GP,feeling a bit of a numpty...and he was shocked! My thyroid function levels were "off the scale",my eyeballs were prodruding,my pulse was 140 AT REST! He asked me how as a nurse I hadn't realised something was wrong? I said "I thought it was normal after a baby". Better to get these things checked out.But I'm sure all wll be well.

Mammie81 · 30/09/2010 13:56

Im sure it will be fine too. Ive not really had any of the other symptoms, so I was just being precautionary really. As the doc was right here, I thought, why not ask!

Ive had a few visual disturbances but they were as I stood up, which he said is normal and not a sign of prolonged high BP. Im not too worried, but pee-ed off that she was just so intrusive first off and then secondly dismissive of everything! He'd already said it was all fine!

Nod and smile whilst giving her the fingers in your head!!

Mammie81 · 01/10/2010 14:07

Ha! Seen a doctor! The hand thing is carpal tunnel! Pitting eodema is fairly common too, but not so tremendously normal. In your face, nosy!
