I forgot to do one last year.... the school collected 81, there are 82 pupils... dd was the only one who didn't do one because i put the label in a drawer and completely forgot about the damn thing Blush

fedupofnamechanging · 30/09/2010 10:51

What's a christmas shoe box?

OuchPassVodka · 30/09/2010 10:52

what is wrong with christmas shoe boxes Confused

RobynLou · 30/09/2010 10:54

there's a questionable christian charity who distribute some of the boxes who some mnetters object to v strongly.

nowt wrong with a christmas shoe box, just be aware of who the people distributing them are.

WhyAyeButterPie · 30/09/2010 10:54

They are contrversial because a lot of charities will only give them to children who will convert to christianity.

ruddynorah · 30/09/2010 10:55

thread about a thread usually does infuriate.

attention seeker Smile

why are you so cross? give your box.

pagwatch · 30/09/2010 10:55

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 30/09/2010 10:55

Um, well, if you're happy about how they're used, then you go, girl.

'S entirely your own choice what charity you give to. But no harm in getting all the info, eh?

"They are contrversial because a lot of charities will only give them to children who will convert to christianity."

I give one through Christian Aid every year and so does DH and he has a problem with the fact that he thinks the children will be preached to before getting there box. But you don't think they actually get them without converting? Did not know that :(

Does anyone know any other charities that give the boxes without an agenda?

BuntyPenfold · 30/09/2010 11:00

Although I am dubious about the distributors, I always do fill a box.

I am very fond of my shoebox recipients although I don't know who they are.

I have recently been giving mine to the Seventh Day Adventists because they take them personally in their own lorry, and cut out the middle men. They bring back some lovely photos.

TrillianAstra · 30/09/2010 11:01

YABU - bugger off to the Christmas topic with your shoebox.

And the horse you rode in on Hmm

BonniePrinceBilly · 30/09/2010 11:01

Give whatever the fuck you want. As long as you are happy with helping to blackmail children in poverty into a particular religion.

And don't lie to yourself that you are doing a good thing either.

" I'm scared of horses and cliches" Grin

BuntyPenfold · 30/09/2010 11:04

The Seventh Day Adventists give the presents to the children in the schools they sponsor, so I feel although there is an agenda, they are not 'converted' just for the gift.

They are converted to get a free education I suppose, but at least they are getting the education.

cupcakesandbunting · 30/09/2010 11:05

Oops, it's Samaritan's Purse that I give through, not Christian Aid. I've just read the other thread.

Sneaky shits, aren't they? They don't mention this in their nice leaflet Hmm This does not sit well with me, I must say. Very uncomfortable about it.

It's shit, isn't it? You think you're doing a good thing and brightening someone's day when actually, you're not. I thought that christians were supposed to be giving and inclusive to all?

BuntyPenfold · 30/09/2010 11:06

What is the other thread?

We do Christmas shoe boxes too. FOr he local childrens homes and children in care.

Now stick that in your box and ride off into the sunset.

OuchPassVodka · 30/09/2010 11:09

cupcakesandbunting and BuntyPenfold,
My folks' church sponser a school, in fact several schools and they send the parcels out. yes the kids do get some religous teaching but most of all they get the education. They just ask for school supplies in their boxes so they kids can benefit from their opportunity. Pens, rulers, colours, pencils etc.

Ds' school is sending out mosquito nets to their partner school. In principle i agree with the scheme but they are encouraging the children to (and I quote) "sell as many as possible" and i dont agree with the selling aspects. I am going to speak to his teacher and tell them that he will not be selling ANYTHING but the school might be getting a donation towards the nets. I dont agree with 5 yo having to sell anything.
