My kids are being brats. We have no food in the house. I bugger off to Tesco, do a monster shop, and grab a bottle of red, so desperate to have a glass I almost slug it in the aisle. And I get fucking ASKED FOR ID. IM A 24YR OLD MARRIED MOTHER OF TWO FOR FUCK SAKE. My shits darling kids have obviously played with ,my purse again as my driving license is missing. So no wine.
AHHHHHHHHHH. I almost told him I didnt want any of the fucking shopping, but I really needed it. God damn you Twat Face in Tesco.
As you were.

Ooh. DS2's hw tonight was about how to change verbs to 'ing' words. I don't think 'fuckinging' was one of them. I will point that out to the teacher tomorrow.

moaningminniewhingesagain · 29/09/2010 21:45

IIRC if they ask for ID, and you can't provide it, they have to refuse. Having said that, I was asked in Morrisons the other week and I am 34. There is no way I look under 25 - I only wish.

I laughed. I had no ID but said I was very flattered,it was the highlight of my week and carried on bagging my shopping, he didn't persue it. Technically I think he was supposed to refuse meHmm but it's a few years since I had a job which invloved selling alcohol.

nannylocal · 29/09/2010 22:01

I take it as a compliment when I get asked for ID Smile(unless I don't have any and then it's really annoying)

mankymooandsqualfie · 29/09/2010 22:28

YABU it's not the shop assistants fault, why should they risk their job just so you can have a bottle of wine?

xstitch · 29/09/2010 22:40

Ided to buy a newspaper tori? Shock What was their reasoning behind that?

I got ided to buy a 3+ computer game. I'm not sure being compared to a 2 year old is a compliment. Mind you 2 year olds have so much more fun :)

You are being a bit unreasonable OP. The person could have lost their job. I know someone who did ask for id but didn't realise the person turned 18 the next day not that day (was a bit scatty) they were fired.

IveStillGotIt · 29/09/2010 23:41

I see the jobsworths are at it again!!!
YANBU, did you have your wedding ring on and were your TWO KIDS with you, when you were doing a BIG SHOP?
I'm 28, have a 10yo DS and sometimes still get asked by twats that are too thick to realise that a 7yo can't give birth, cause that's how old I would have to have been when I had DS in order to be underage.
Strangely enough, when I'm on my own, buying only booze, even alcopops (underagers drink of choice!) they don't bat an eyelid, yet when doing a £80 shop i.e washing powder, cleaning products, food, 10yo DS standing next to me MUMMING me for stuff the thick idiot jobsworths ask for ID.
A couple of weeks ago, in Asda, whilst doing a big shop, DS standing right next to me, 32yo DP (and he looks it) standing there as well, this fucking thick twat tried to refuse me, I simply said "how old do you think I was when I had DS" and she said "I still need to see ID" so I turned to DP and said "she obviously thinks your some sort of pervert who gets 7yo pregnant" she couldn't put it through quick enough after I said that, she nearly dropped the bottle!!!

mybabywakesupsinging · 29/09/2010 23:46

I am 34. Have had 2 dc. Have wrinkles etc. A few months ago Sainsburys would not sell me a pair of scissors because I had no ID.
I was on my own and it was about 10pm. I had a huge trolley of shopping for starving, fridge-emptying dc - must have obviously been a family shop.
I still have no idea why they thought I was underage. The lady next in the queue thought it was hilarious.

hogshead · 29/09/2010 23:57

I got I.d'ed last month for a lottery ticket. I am 32 next month!

laurenamium · 29/09/2010 23:58

Im only 22 so do still get asked for ID fairly regularly which I dont mind as always make sure I have some on me...I work in a bar and know about the fines etc.

But I was asked last month for some ID to buy redbull...yes that NON ALCOHOLIC caffein drink!

IveStillGotIt · 30/09/2010 00:05

Another thing, it really gets on my tits when people say "it's a compliment".
It's not!!! Maybe it is if I'm on my own, but not when I'm doing a FAMILY shop and DS, who's TEN and DP are standing there!
One of my friends got asked ID for a toddlers dinner set once, because it had cutlery in it, with a cartoon design!!! Her THREE kids were with her.
It's insulting and anything but a compliment, especially in my friends case, as they obviously thought she was 17 with three kids. These jobsworths need to be trained not to insult customers and also some common sense.

BexieID · 30/09/2010 00:05

YABU

Jobsworths or not, the staff have to ask for ID, otherwise they can loose their job/get fined/get criminal record and the store can loose their licence to sell alcohol.

I know it must have been annoying that your kids hid your ID, I would have been equally miffed at that, but flattered to be asked (get annoyed when I don't in Asda).

I'm 33 and my work colleagues have all said they would ask me for ID. And yes, I do work for cunting tescos Tesco Grin

Credit cards for ID are no good, as I know one you can have when 16 with parent guarantee or something. And it needs to be photo ID with a PASS hologram.

robynjane - It's a tricky one really as I don't ID everyone in a family group, but I would ID a group of teenagers. Then again, your son didn't have ID and you were refused because they thought you were buying it for him. Not sure what I would have done as for all I know, you could be a test purchaser or mystery shopper. I have refused to serve a whole group because one person had no ID. I am appaled to hear that the jobsworth was 'going to be told off' though, as the training states that managers will support us Hmm, some support there then.

BertieBotts · 30/09/2010 00:16

Hmm, but mystery shoppers to test for IDing won't be in the form of a family with 10 year old child. They would be 15/16 year old kids.

Used to work for WHS and we had to ID for newspapers at the weekend if they came with a free DVD which had a 15 or 18 certificate. Had a young lad try to buy one once and I couldn't sell it to him as he was underage! He looked really upset about it and I was worried that he might get bollocked if he went home without the paper so I took the DVD out and gave him the paper without it. No idea if that was allowed Blush

Parsgirl · 30/09/2010 06:43

I wish I was asked for ID obviously have the old hag look going on. PSML over the subject line

Dragonwoman · 30/09/2010 09:51

Re the family shop thing - I used to do the family shop for my mother as a teenager. She was as work and left me a list. Also it is possible for a teenage shopper to have younger siblings with them. It can't just be assumed they are your children. or you could be an au pair. So the family shop with kids thing doesn't prove your age.

bluecardi · 30/09/2010 09:58

What gets me with this id business is Why have items that require a id check on the shelves for anyone to put in the trolley & wait until the checkout? If the shop had a serious policy on id it would require id to even look at these items. Would shop elsewhere

ShirleyKnot · 30/09/2010 10:02

hahaha at needing ID to look at wine. HAHAHA!

Threelittleducks · 30/09/2010 10:18

I'm sorry, I have been a bar staff for about 8 years now and yes, we use the 25 policy and yes I have had training to comply with new legislation.

I too was I.D'd for a bottle of wine that I was buying for my sis last weekend.

That's my 23 year old sis who has worked in that same Tesco store for 2 years. And all the staff know who I am. The one who refused the sale has known me since before I had my 1st ds (am now pg with my 2nd - quite hugely so actually).

Anyhoo, I have my screaming ds with me, am hugely pg , am with my 51 year old mother and still got refused!(yes, I know I should have had I.D, but darling ds had hidden it under the rug at home - which I discovered later)

I was aware that Tesco had the 25 policy, but am also wawre it is a GUIDELINE not the law.

We were trained to use this policy as a tool to detect underage purchasers of alcohol. iT is supposed to be applied with common sense, not just used blindly.

Now I am clearly, CLEARLY not 18. I look under 25 possibly (which I am not btw), but am def. not 18.
I am hugely pg - wine def. not for me.
My mum wasn't allowed to buy the wine in case se gave it to me.

I'm sorry but FUCKING JOBSWORTH.

I too got the rage and emailed their customer services and was fobbed off with corporate crap about policy.

I have no problem with the policy - in fact I have used it myself when genuinely unsure, but have never ever just blindly used it like that. It alienates customers and turns everything into just another ridiculous corporate load of PISH.

Threelittleducks · 30/09/2010 10:21

Also, you can spou about it being cashier's job blah blah blah, fair enough. But bloody cashiers should use common sense!!! Come on!! It's not that hard!

Ahhhhhhhhnd relax.

Don't often get riled like that, but tbh am fed up of all this 'policy' pish gone mad. Ridiculous.

FoghornLeghorn · 30/09/2010 10:29

YABU it's their job .... but I do feel your pain !

I'm 26, married, 3 children but I constantly get asked for ID so I always have it with me, or I get DH to be the one paying and he never gets asked even though we are the same age.

I got asked for ID in Toys R Us a couple of years back buy a friends DS a toy gun for his birthday - the woman was actually not going to serve me because I didn't have any ID. A few choice words and she did .... numpty !

loveulotslikejellytots · 30/09/2010 10:30

I got told to leave weatherspoons the other night because I didn't have ID (the one bloody time I didn't take it out) - despite the following:

  • Having been in there many times before, on average 3 times a month
  • DH and I had been in there for a meal with a friend, her DH and their DD. Friend took DD to Nana's at 7, came back and we had a bottle of wine between us - which I bought without being questioned!
  • I'm married (no I know not entirely valid)
  • the jobsworth who told me to leave was a girl DH went out with about 5 years ago, and always gives me evil looks when in there, she's deputy manager
  • DH's friend works there and has known me for at least 3 years, but jobsworth deputy manager would listen to him
  • she ended up telling me to leave

I went home (walked!) to get my ID and smugly politely enjoyed watching her read my date of birth.

It is bloody annoying, but they are doing their job. If it had been anyone else that had asked me I would have said, yeah no problem I'll pop home and get it. But she was doing it to piss me off...

loveulotslikejellytots · 30/09/2010 10:31

That's supposed to be wouldn't listen to him

FindingMyMojo · 30/09/2010 10:33

"There will come a time when you will lean over the counter and kiss the person behind the till for asking if you are old enough to buy alcohol. Believe me."

what feelingsensitive said!!!!

GetOrfMoiLand · 30/09/2010 10:34

I am 32 and have been ID'd. Bloody hell I take any compliment i can get and when i am refused wine I am delighted.

You are only in your twenties OP whippersnapper. Wait until you are in your 30s and this will end up being the highlight of your day.

And, stop fucking swearing. Grin

FindingMyMojo · 30/09/2010 10:34

oh but they are cunting Tescos indeed (for so many reasons) - so YANBU!!!!
