to wish non-smokers could carry water pistols to put out idiot's cigarettes?

Was stopped at traffic lights the other day with my windows open in the sunshine - then had to shut one window because of an idiot smoking in the car next to me. Cross as I was, I then saw he had a baby and a toddler in the back!Furious does not describe it - I had to stop myself winding the window back down and pointing out the error of his ways. Can all passionate non-smokers not carry a water pistol and be allowed to put out every cigarette we come across? Or maybe someone in power could actually stand up and be counted and ban smoking in cars, in public, anywhere near children - you get the idea?!

charlie are you an ex-smoker or a smokers child?.Grin

Mumcentreplus · 29/09/2010 21:26

facts are its legal..you have issues talk to the government...

OrmRenewed · 29/09/2010 21:28

Well perhaps if you hadn't both been in cars pumping out vile poisonous carcinogenic fumes, you'd have more of a leg to stand on.

OrmRenewed · 29/09/2010 21:29

Oh I see it's been pointed out.

The 'absolutely have to' defence. Which is no defence. As no-one has to. To drive is a choice.

TechnoKitten · 29/09/2010 21:38

Just wondering how everyone knows the OP wasn't driving an electric car powered via a green / renewable tarriff?

Ok she probably wasn't - but comparing exhaust fumes with cigarette smoke is comparing apples with pears.

OP, agree that I hate seeing children suffer cigarette smoke. Not sure your water pistol is such a good way to get the message through though - would prefer better education and support with dedicated "quit staff" throughout pregnancy / at family HV sessions. Educate and encourage rather than vilify?

(I would happily pay higher taxes if - somehow - smoking was eradicated overnight.)

melpomene · 29/09/2010 21:39

There is already loads of support available to help people stop smoking: free helpline, free group and one-to-one advice sessions, nicotine replacements on prescription or over-the counter eg see here. I'm afraid I don't have much sympathy for the argument that it's so hard to stop smoking - unless you have unsupportive friends/partner/relatives who keep waving cigarettes under your nose and trying to tempt you.

The other day I noticed a very cute baby in a (rear-facing) pram, and then noticed that both of her parents were standing next to the pram smoking and holding their cigarettes right over the pram, inches from the baby. Never mind the smoke, she could even have grabbed the cigarettes and burnt herself!

Mumcentreplus · 29/09/2010 21:49

Mel are you a smoker?...not speaking on behalf of those ding-bat parents...but if you have never been one you really dont know..no dis-respect...I think all those sessions and free support are lip service....why dont they ban cigarettes?...its a money maker.. and now the smokers are blamed and ostracised for their addiction...but its not illegal..its a known fact it causes various cancers..why is it not banned?...addiction is about wanting to quit but its never easy...so perhaps until you have experienced something even close...you might have sympathy...

ivykaty44 · 29/09/2010 21:53

why are you not cycling with one of these no tax, join the ctc for insurance and get the chidlren around on this if you have them - if not on your bike or use your feet

Theincrediblesulk1 · 29/09/2010 21:57

people drowning themselves cheap perfume gets on my tits too, shall i throw water at them?

Look we all encounter things we don't like, but this is not a dictatorship (allegedly) so you cant stop people smoking in the street. I would have given him a mouth full about his children being in the car though! I really hate that!

ivykaty44 · 29/09/2010 22:05

my dd broke her arm last week and after an operation and a night in hospital we were just gettign dd up and about - dd asked to go outside to telephone her granddad who was in france, sister said it was ok and so outside we went.

On the way back into the hosptial there was a path with a railing down one side and the railing was around 10-15 foot at a gues - so you had to walk this distance to the door

a patient is smokign at the end of the railing so any one wlakign past has to get up close

my dd 11y said to the other patient your not going to get better smoking

the woman didn't know what to say

but if you were that woman - did you realise that all your second hand smoke was going in the windows of the childrens ward where the sick chidlren where...?

Theincrediblesulk1 · 29/09/2010 22:12

Actually smokers get better quicker (so i was told by a nurse) because they are determined to get on their feet and have a little walk around. But yeah i agree what a selfish woman!

OmniaParatus · 29/09/2010 22:38

Is anyone reminded of the Simpsons, where Arnie goes to jail and squirts the fags of all the tough jailbirds as they close menacingly around him - 'Squirt, squirt, squirt, I'm gonna need more water!' Grin.

Seriously though, I can kind of see the OP's point. My niece smokes round her DD- smokes dope too, but in a different room so that's OK Hmm. I mentioned it to her mum but she doesn't see anything wrong with it because she smokes too. We also live next to a school and at pick up time I saw a heavily pregnant woman smoking in her closed car with her daughter in the back. Sad

I can completely understand if you smoke it is your choice, but inflicting your smoke on someone else when it has been proven to be harmful is pure selfishness imho.

Theincrediblesulk1 · 29/09/2010 22:41

agreed!

And yes it was reminded of that episode haaa haaa haaa

NerdyFace · 01/10/2010 12:50

See, I think the opposite should happen charlieliz

I think SMOKERS should carry around water pistols to squirt the sanctamonius anti-smoking facists who try to ram their propaganda down the smokers throats!

(This coming from a non-smoker..haha)

IMoveTheStars · 01/10/2010 12:53

Oh OP, I think you should squirt smokers with a water pistol. Then come back on here to report what happens next.

Seriously.. what a ridiculous OP. Hmm

taintedpaint · 01/10/2010 13:24

I'm so tired of all these pseudo-funny threads about smokers that have sprung up lately. How can you possibly make comments when you're polluting yourself? Bloody stupid. Well, it's bloody stupid anyway, but the hypocrisy makes it worse.

Oh, and I'm not a smoker btw, in case you're wondering.

Tee2072 · 01/10/2010 13:32

I don't smoke (although I used to) and I also don't own a car (although I used to) so am I allowed to comment?

I actually have no problem with smokers, except the one I was next to waiting to cross the street next today, and others like her. My son was in his pram in front of me and if I hadn't backed him up quickly, she would have flicked her ash all over him. And I know she knew he was there, because she smiled at him not 10 seconds before.

So if you smoke, could you at least try to be aware of the little people right in your line of fire? So to speak...

Thank you.

bumpsoon · 01/10/2010 14:20

Absolutely as long as i can carry a glue gun to shut the mouths of people who cannot eat with theirs shut Grin

MoralDefective · 01/10/2010 22:04

Shame on them for smoking with a baby in the car...........otherwise get over it
