To not have a problem with this voucher which allows poorer mothers to purchase, amongst other things, formula?

The offending voucher.

Someone I know has a serious issue with this because it mentions that you may use the voucher to buy formula. It doesn't say you must buy formula, and in fact you could look at it as a better deal for breastfeeders as they can spend it on other things for their baby apart from formula.

I think she's overreacting, AIBU?

I'd say it's classed as promotion of formula

and "it's" shouldn't have an apostrophe

pedant alert

Yes it should, you were using it as a contraction of 'it is' not as a possessive.

mamatomany · 29/09/2010 20:22

Are formula feeders the majority, really ?

mamatomany · 29/09/2010 20:23

This isn't a gift voucher people can buy for friends it's a donation they can make to charity a bit like buying a goat for an african village is that right ?

HumphreyCobbler · 29/09/2010 20:24

Er yes. By a massive margin.

GypsyMoth · 29/09/2010 20:25

Some of us have had a lump removal and can't breastfeed........ Is that ok with you bourbon???

Insensitive clap trap!! A problem with ff my arse!!! More like a chance to attempt to bring others down, which is boring, and doesn't work and has been done to death!!!!

Nothing wrong with ff if it suits

StealthPolarBear · 29/09/2010 20:25

no it shouldn't angel - I wasn't on about the OP, I just realised!
This bit: "2.Enclosed in it's own wallet, (see image on left) we send you the gift card you selected & that features information about the programme you have chosen so support. "

StealthPolarBear · 29/09/2010 20:26

sorry, the OP or my own post
think i'm off to bed

Galena · 29/09/2010 20:27

angelberry - the it's that shouldn't have an apostrophe is on the website linked to in the OP.

wouldliketoknow · 29/09/2010 20:28

i personally take an offense to those faulting ff, i mixed feed and lots of tears it cost me, it was really hard and painful and still i didn't have enough milk, my baby NEEDS formula, some of those vouchers coming my way please,
and you cannot use gift cards/store points to buy formula, i tried.

angelberry · 29/09/2010 20:29

You're right - for those who do FF, formula is a vital necessity. But for those who BF and struggle with the whole boobs out in public/comments from family members/generally feeling in a minority, the whole thing is made more difficult by the perception that formula is so normal that it's in fact a "necessity". I think that's why we sould so militant sometimes, when really we are just trying to deal with that scary suspicion that everyone else thinks we are a bit freakish/crazy for doing what we're doing. I guess that means my issue is partly a personal one - you could say it's about my own insecurities - but I would love our society to work differently so that nobody had those insecurities.

I certainly do not judge other mothers for how they feed their babies. It's tragic that many new mums, whether breast or bottle feeding, deal with a lot of angst over feeding methods and other people's judgments.

Things like the wording on this voucher really don't help for breastfeeding mums - and if that sounds hyper-sensitive, I'm sure you remember that hyper-sensitive is how you feel after giving birth followed by nights and nights of sleep deprivation.

BoojaB · 29/09/2010 20:44

Since when are "powdered milk and moisturiser" "essential"?

Anything that promotes formula isn't ok with me!

BoojaB · 29/09/2010 20:46

As StealthPolarBear said "it's" in point 2 shouldn't have a comma!

StealthPolarBear · 29/09/2010 20:48

well actually it's an apostrophe
Kind of a hang gliding comma Wink

laweaselmys · 29/09/2010 20:50

I don't believe that the sensitivities of people trying to BF newborns and struggling is as important as small babies in poverty having enough milk at all. Formula is very expensive, and some people cope by watering it down which is very bad for babies.

It wouldn't be nearly as expensive if the ludicrous laws which 'protect' breast fedding by punishing formula feeders with excessive expenses were lifted. It does sp much more harm than good.

dizietsma · 29/09/2010 20:52

I dunno chocolatebourbon, I think saying that it can be construed as "so normal that it's in fact a "necessity"" is overreaching for something to find offense at.

OP posts:
dizietsma · 29/09/2010 20:52

I agree laweaselmys.

which laws are these

i though formula companies charged whatever they reckoned people would pay

is there a legal minimum price? where can i find this out?

BoojaB · 29/09/2010 20:54

Sorry to ruin this thread!
