Sorry for the expletive. I'm just doing some admin and have discovered that you can convert your vouchers into discount vouchers for all sort of things. I agree it's a nice perk to get them converted to Sainsburys, ELC, etc and it's good but a slight stretch to have them go towards clothing at Gap and New look but you can also get Spa vouchers and bloody pub vouchers! Why should people get tax free bloody vouchers to use them on a sodding manicure and getting pissed? Not that I have anything against either of those activities I just think it's a shocking waste of money! And why should people without kids effectively pay towards this???
I am fuming. Someone give me a name to be mad at!

Oh this is someone trying to have a go at selfish parents and how society enables them. ONly without being in possession of a fucking clue.

Chandon · 29/09/2010 16:12

I just spluttered my tea at the op`s request: Someone give me a name to be mad at.

And then the response comes: Alphonse?

I thought it was really funny in a random sort of way, shame it was just a mistake loopy, it made me laugh

lal123 · 29/09/2010 16:13

see e.g. here

DaisySteiner · 29/09/2010 16:14

Some companies who issue childcare vouchers on behalf of employers also issue other vouchers which some companies give away as bonuses or incentives.

If a pub is stoopid enough to accept a childcare voucher as payment they will struggle to get the company to honour them unless they also happen to be OFSTED registered (unlikely)

firsttimemum77 · 29/09/2010 16:15

Sorry I should add that I have never received an email for use at pub or spa, but say 7.5% off at elc or 25% sainsburys etc. I think basically you can buy vouchers for say elc using your childcare vouchers and receive the discount on them, if that makes sense!

Snorbs · 29/09/2010 16:26

lal123 those are discounts and special offers. They're not in exchange for childcare vouchers, they're just like the books of money-off coupons you get free from your bank for being a loyal customer.

Childcare vouchers are tax-free and, as such, what you can do with them is very tightly controlled. You can't just swap them for random goods and services.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/09/2010 16:50

I work at ELC and can confirm we definitely do not take childcare vouchers as payment! We have never had anyone try to use them either... we have had someone try to pay for a load of stuff with our play money though, that was fun. Grin

Okay this is what it says on childcarevouchers.co.uk

Hello (name), welcome to your Childcare Vouchers account.

Big savings at big name stores - now including Laithwaites Wine

In addition to the 38+ leading supermarkets, high street stores and retailers offering discounted shopping vouchers, you can now save 8% at Laithwaites Wine.

With Advantages, you can also enjoy discounted tickets for theatre, sporting and musical events as well as special holiday deals, all designed to help make your money go further.

I hope I am wrong but it seems like you can use your voucher money and convert it into other type of vouchers.

You're wrong

SolidGoldBrass · 29/09/2010 16:55

You're wrong, as clearly explained by Snorbs.
Can we help you out with a list of things it might actually be worth getting your undies in a bundle about, instead?

clutterqueen · 29/09/2010 16:58

Honestly I'm not making this up. It seems to be the case. Here's a bit from the website

Childcare vouchers are a great way for employers to give working parents help with dependent children. They can help you find quality childcare to suit the needs of your family ? and, because you don?t pay tax or National Insurance on childcare vouchers, you can save up to £1,195 per year. Not to mention the big savings on different lifestyle products and services we make available to our Childcare Voucher users.

(I put the bold there, but it's their text)

You can't use them for wine. You can order additional vouchers. These are different vouchers unrelated to childcare vouchers.

FindingMyMojo · 29/09/2010 17:01

all I read is you can get Nectar points for childcare???? Then I'M RICH, I'M RICH!!!!!!!!!

ChippyMinton · 29/09/2010 17:03

Diiferent vouchers, I think. My workplaces offers vouchers, think they are called High Street vouchers or similar which you buy from your taxed income, at a 10% discount.

Snorbs · 29/09/2010 17:03

You're confusing two different things.

First, there are the childcare vouchers, redeemable only for childcare at accredited childcare providers.

Second, the childcare voucher provider has done a deal with various other organisations that offer discounts on their products. Just like the money-off vouchers you get in the Sunday papers or from your bank.

At no point do you exchange your childcare vouchers for the discounts off other products.

The discounts are just an added incentive and marketing thing to make it seem like you're getting more for your money.

SanctiMoanyArse · 29/09/2010 17:06

'Find me an ofsted registered pub and I'll be there like a shot!'

Grin

And I don't think i;ve ever met anyone in receipt of chidlcare vouchers anyway

And frankly, where I come from, if they could be used down the pub there'd be a general strike until they all got them.

Mrsmackie · 29/09/2010 17:07

Er hello - all it says is that if you are part of the voucher scheme you can get other benefits too - it doesn't mean you can actually use your vouchers for shopping and services, just that you might be entitled to special offers on these things.

sparkle12mar08 · 29/09/2010 17:10

I despair of the general intelligenece of some people, I really do...
