to think this is not on...

Our next door neighbours are on holiday for two weeks. Meanwhile they've left their dog home alone. Another neighbour is going in to feed him and play with him, but he's been barking all evening. I'm guessing he's lonely/bored/scared?

I don't have a key, so can't pop in. Am I right in thinking it's just utterly unreasonable to leave a dog for this long? The neighbour who's helping has a dog of her own, and has apparently offered to go over quite a considerable bit, but she's a little way up the road, so I doubt she can hear him barking like we can.

I'm thinking I'll go and have a chat to her tomorrow - just wondering if that's the best thing to do? Is it common practise to leave a dog like this? I'm not a dog owner myself - cat person all the way.

I wouldn't leave my boys overnight alone together. Poor dog, I bet he is scared and lonely. & poor you.

maddy68 · 28/09/2010 21:05

To be fair he is probably better off in his own home than in kennels. He hasn't been abandoned he has someone to visit regularly and feed, etc he will be barking because he isn't having the normal attention he would usually have. He will settle I am sure. If it continues then have a word with the visitor. Perhaps they can visit later too?

Push a chicken bone through the letterbox.

that's awful!!!! is this other neighbour walking him too?

Mumcah · 28/09/2010 21:07

I think it is cruel to leave a dog for two weeks. In fact I think it's cruel to leave a dog all day every day if you both work full time.

Not sure, yesterday. I would guess she probably is - but I haven't really been party to the arrangements.

Cupcakes - aren't chicken bones bad for dogs? [vague memories of splinter scare stories]

Yes they are, MrsMellow. That's why I said it. I made a very bad joke. I'm sorry :(

MrsMellowdrummer · 28/09/2010 21:13

Oh, ok! Grin

You see, I know nothing about dogs!

MrsMellowdrummer · 28/09/2010 21:13

Or chicken bones, for that matter [vegetarian alert!]

I would voice your concerns to the neighbour who is visiting the dog- like you say they won't be able to hear the barking.

You're right- I don't think leaving a dog that long is right, even if someone is popping in

taintedpaint · 28/09/2010 21:16

YADNBU. This is horrible. And tbh, I'd probably be reporting them for it. Poor dog :(.

MmeLindt · 28/09/2010 21:16

I would not leave ny dog alone. I would rather put her in kennels.

Yes, have a word with the neighbor.

cupcakesandbunting · 28/09/2010 21:18

Grin MrsMellow. I was trying to get a rise out of the pooch lovers, like I always do when a hound thread comes up. Bad human.

BudaisintheZONE · 28/09/2010 21:19

Poor dog. Def not on.

My dog loves her 'kennels'. Would hate to think of her on her own for so long. They generally just love to be with people.

MrsMellowdrummer · 28/09/2010 21:21

That's wicked Cupcakes... very wicked! Wink

Still barking though. Sad

I think we live on the same road. I could have written that word for word Sad.
