Howdy partners (harhar)!
My sister has an interview at JL on Saturday and it's one of these group interview malarkeys, which neither of us have ever done so I'm a bit useless!
Does anyone know what to expect and any hints an tips? Much appreciated!

I interviewed for them twice, once about 4 years ago and once about 3.

We had to 'sell' a random item from the shop to the interviewer, say what was our proudest moment, and then build the tallest tower we could out of paper and paperclips only.

Not sure if that was just my branch or the country over.

Tell her to expect cringiness, but to be as enthusiastic as possible.

I had to do the sell a pen thing too , didn't have to build a tower though , have some good team player stories ready and they will ask you how you would deal with an angry customer , also look super groomed when you go in it's very important to them good luck!

I don't know about JL specifically, but IMO generally with group exercises they are obviously looking at how you interact with people - i.e., they want to know you are a "team player".

So, although doing well in the test is good (i.e., if it's building a tower, making sure some sort of tower is built), you don't score points for how tall the tower is. You will score points for things like influencing the team positively, contributing appropriately, leading the team if it starts going off track, making sure everyone is included, praising others if they have a good idea etc.

So, tell your sister to display good manners and common sense.

Good luck :-)

tell her to make sure she is the time keeper. they like that. also she should get the quieter ones to join in. don't try to take over the task, be the one to encourage others.

I did the group interviews at John Lewis (got job) and years later used to help run them.

They look at how you easily you can speak to others, teamwork and willingness to participate.

Just be friendly to everyone, make suggestions, listen to others suggestions and give positive feedback. Don't worry about 'winning' tasks just make sure you actively take part in them.

Be happy no matter how silly the task seems and make effort to engage with lots of different people rather than sticking with person you sit next to all the time.
