Parking for the school run

More a question than a AIBU... do schools have the right (legal or moral) to tell parents that they may not park in public parking bays on a public street when coming to the school for drop off and pickup?

If you think they do have that right, then why when we are private citizens who pay our council tax and road tax?

MrsWobble if my children went to your children's school then I would respect that request because it makes sense.
The thing is in my case, parking on the high street doesn't really impact anyone as far as I can see. Not children walking to school. Not non-existent local shops. Maybe the estate agents find it hard to grab a convenient space, but do they usually come to work for 9am? (I don't know).
The traffic can still pass up and down the street albeit less easily. The only thing I can think of is that the cars have to slow down because they pass close to the parked cars, but then there is usually a queue anyway due to the school crossing further up the street.

Some have asked why I do not ask the HT. The answer is she can be a bit of a control freak and she would view any question (no matter how mildly put) as a criticism. So like most of the other parents I only speak to her if I really have to.

Its people parking on the yellow zig zags and across driveways that annoy me. I really can't see the problem with parking in marked bays as long as you don't over stay any limit on the space.

MrsWobble one school I worked at did the same voluntary no car zone between something like 8.30 and 9 (and similar at the end of the school day)

The parents all accepted it, alternative parking was at the village hall and they walked along the footpath around to the school - we needed it without a doubt since it was a single track very tight road going up to the school and basically the number of stand-offs where it was a battle for who'd give up and reverse back first were getting ridiculous. (Very small rural school that one)

I've seen some spectacularly inconsiderate parking outside schools though - blocking residents in on their drive (I don't care if the school was there when you moved in - you still don't arsing well do that because it makes you an utter twunt), zig-zags? what are they?!, blocking the entire exit drive to the school was a common one at one place I worked at - and when the head tried to introduce a park and walk system using the local supermarket carpark (about 2 mins down the road) to alleviate congestion.... I got flipping sworn at by one mother for 15 minutes - I didn't write the chuffing letter!!!!

well it sounds like you can park there with a clear conscience.
i would ignore the HT in this instance!
