To have been sacred witless when the phone rang at 1:15am and to still be a bit concerned?

I was a couple of days ago.

It's never good news when the phone rings in the middle of the night is it? And I was fast asleep, so it got me in a bit of a tizz.

I appears though that it was a telesales call, very insistent that they needed to speak to Mrs Create (DH answered) DH told them where to go as it was the middle of the night and never established the reason for their call.

1471 said number withheld, which apparently means it was call from the UK, as overseas calls will say "we do not have the number..."

So, why would a telesales company in the UK call at 1:15am and could there be a more sinister reason for the call?

No telesales in the UK would call at 1:15am. I would say something doesn't add up, hope you get to the bottom of it

ramblingmum · 27/09/2010 21:49

Could it have been a automated call go wrong?

Chrysanthemum5 · 27/09/2010 21:51

I had an American company calling me in the night a few years ago the phone company contacted them and it stopped think they had my number by mistake. Probably the same thing?

KathyImLost · 27/09/2010 21:55

Could have been an abroad number, that uses a UK number to direct calls. The bank I worked for used to do this (it makes it cheaper for them). So it might be overseas even tho the number isn't IYSWIM.

Don't stress about it tho. If it was serious they'd call back. It's likely just a mistake.

PaulineCampbellJones · 27/09/2010 21:59

It could be international as Kathy says, it just depends on the call routing.
If you are worried then you can get a service called Anonymous Call Rejection which would not let these calls through to you.

Years ago our phone rang in the middle of the night on several occasions. It turned out to be our BT answerphone gone wrong.

WitchyWooWoo · 27/09/2010 22:42

telesales have rang our number at about 2am, apparently we had won an all inclusive cruise holiday to the carribean. shame i didn't give a damn at that time in the morning

anyabanya · 27/09/2010 23:10

I got a couple of texts from orange in the early hours of the morning, telling me that I had earned myself a new magic number.

It was fun trying to explain to DH why I was getting texts at 3 am.

We've had many calls at 1am and beyond over the last ten years. Mostly they were prank calls from friends of our offspring, with number withheld. Utterly terrifying though - I got several in succession with this youth just sounding sinister (and then giggling in the background from some sleepover or other), and you really just didn't want to pick up the phone the next time as it was so scary to listen to. For us, it would never have been a telesales as we don't get any at all, nor have an answer phone.

Katisha · 27/09/2010 23:56

We had a phase of silent late-night calls when we moved here. Eventually I got the BT system to block the last number once it had happened again. That seemed to put a stop to it.

ccpccp · 28/09/2010 08:48

Next time it happens, check your attic. The caller could be closer than you think...

EauRouge · 28/09/2010 08:55

I've had this as well, someone trying to send me a fax at 4am while DH was away in the middle east. I was not amused. We got caller ID not long after that, we can't really use those call rejection services as it would block my brother from phoning. On the other hand, that does sound quite tempting...

pluperfect · 28/09/2010 09:17

Ohhh, ccpccp, what do you mean about the attic? Are you suggesting squirrels, or ghosts?

sterrryerryoh · 28/09/2010 09:54

Are you a keyholder for a business, or are you listed as someone?s alarm contact? It could be that an alarm receiving centre was trying to get hold of a keyholder for something. They wouldn?t be able to tell your DH why they were phoning, as they?re only allowed to talk to the registered keyholder?
