to want those signs out of my house removed?

Hi, I've just moved to a new place and there are still two "to let" signs outside. I'm not English so I don't know how these things work here, but where are the agencies supposed to collect them? (or will they stay there forever?). Can I ask to have them removed? They look really ugly!

Phone the agencies and ask them to take them down.

acebaby · 24/09/2010 11:50

YANBU. Just ring the agency and tell them to come and collect them. If they don't show up in a reasonable time, just remove them yourself (this is what we did!)

Mouseface · 24/09/2010 11:56

Ours were down the day before we moved in, and there was a bottle of fizz and a new home card waiting for us inside!!!

Take them down and stick them in the back garden/side of the house/front garden - somewhere they can access if you are out - until they come and collect them.

BuntyPenfold · 24/09/2010 11:59

Can't they just 'fall over.'?

Firawla · 24/09/2010 12:01

I would just take them down myself then ask agency to come and collect them. Wouldn't really want people thinking my home was "available"

Mamumu · 24/09/2010 12:02

The problem is that they're fixed to the ground with cement... don't know how to take them out! :-S

Better to suggest you'll be tossing them if they don't come; they can take their own sweet time otherwise (free advertising for them innit).

CrispyTheCrisp · 24/09/2010 12:04

They try to leave them up for advertising and to entice people to come into their shop/phone them up. Then tell them that that specific property has just gone but they have others. V naughty, and ugly as OP says. If they are cemented in i would certainly say they are hoping not to remove them

Def NBU

Also, check that your house is not still being advertised on rightmove or similar - particularly if there are floor plans. We have always had to ask the agent to remove our details from the internet (both renting and buying)

NordicPrincess · 24/09/2010 12:09

phone them and request they are removed

nocake · 24/09/2010 12:14

Cement? Which letting agent uses cement? Are you sure they haven't just fixed their sign to an existing post? Just remove the sign (not the post) and stick it down the side of the house.

nameymcnamechange · 24/09/2010 12:14

Estate Agent boards are not allowed to remain up for more than 2 weeks after the transaction is completed.

Have you phoned them yet Mamumu?

ericshen · 24/09/2010 12:24

Two to let signs
Are they both for your house?

emptyshell · 24/09/2010 13:57

Ours was taken down the afternoon after we moved in. The for sale boards were never taken away (he rented because he couldn't sell it - probably because his DIY was so flipping awful) - so we just punted them in the garden shed if they ever want them back.

I'll be yanking the sold board down outside our new house the SECOND we complete to be honest (it's only three doors down from where we rent)!

pluperfect · 24/09/2010 14:09

Cement? That is madness.

But estate agents are notorious for leaving signs up. There is still a SOLD (stc) sign up outside our old house, TWO MONTHS after the sale fell through.

The longer it stays there, the smugger I feel about how publicly dishonest they are being. This complements their behind-closed-doors dishonesty, you understand!

Mamumu · 26/09/2010 07:31

Thanks girls, I did it myself. You were right, it wasn't cemented (I thought it was, but it was only hanged/stucked - don't know the word you use in English) to the wall. I removed it myself yesterday and put it in the backyard. Don't feel like calling them though (don't have a landline yet and calls are expensive from my mobile). I thought that I will keep it for a few weeks and then, if they don't ask for it, just throw it.

AnyFuleKno · 26/09/2010 13:39

You could email them

RedHeels · 26/09/2010 14:30

In my contract, it said that the agency's sign was to be there for 2 weeks after the beginning of the tenancy. Although they changed it from "To Let" to "Let By...".

mummytime · 26/09/2010 14:34

If you couldn't remove it you could have called you local authority as they don't like these signs being up longer than necessary.

I hope you enjoy your new home!

Mamumu · 26/09/2010 14:57

Thanks mummytime, I already am! And now that I've taken off the sign all by myself I feel both good and bad (but in a good way) at the same time! ;D

burglars notoriously look out for these signs as the properties are most likely empty and easy targets for them.
There was an attempted burglary on our neighbours house the night we moved in, we removed our signs straight away after that!

pluperfect · 27/09/2010 08:57

Yes, June2009, they probably also think that new tenants have not yet got their locking-up habits sorted. I know I am still adjusting to that!
