to think this is a very odd list of words to send home with a reception class

Not quite 3 weeks into term and DD's come back with the following list to learn:

Shouted
rabbit
feet
running
back
look
hands
dog
cat
orange
apple
jump
out
over
under
the
that
with

She can read a bit but I'm surprised by this list so early in the year and she's having trouble with a few of them (especially shouted, that, and with)

AIBU if I ask her teacher to explain the justification for this list?

zipzap, moondog always recommends Headsprout and IIRC used it with her own DD.

Nancy I don't know how you do it but you were absolutely right. She's nearing the end of level 2 and as you say these are some of the key words for level 3. The teacher apologized and said there should have been a note in with it explaining the list but she'd forgotten to put it in. Apparently I'm just meant to read it through with DD and familiarise her with them but not to push her to learn them.

She's doing jolly phonics along side it.

Zipzap can you try asking your son to read bits of his bed time stories? I sometimes pretend I am having difficulty with words (especially words I know DD can read) and she takes great pride in helping me out. Does require acting ability on your side though!

Grin It was the word 'shouted' that made me think of it actually!

I was going to say the same as Nancy and it was the word shouted that made me go and look at dd's folder with her words in it

Shock oh dear, DD has been coming home with letters for us to practice with, not words ! is that Bad?

alicet · 24/09/2010 23:20

Ds came home with an envelope of words. 'Biff' 'Chip' 'Kipper' 'Floppy' 'the' 'a' 'Mum'Dad' and another one - can't remember what.

Now I get biff chip et al are characters in the series of books they are using to learn to read. But it struck me as very random that they were the first ones to learn!!!!
