that's it really.

Am on my third now - a Black and Decker powerbuster. Crap. Won't pick up anything more meaningful than a grain of sand - and that's only if it's on a shiny hard surface.

I really want them to be good as I really can't be arsed to get the vacuum cleaner out every second, but haven't found a good one yet.

I agree! I have now given up and just use a dustpan and brush in-between hooverings.

DetectivePotato · 22/09/2010 16:07

YABU, I have just used mine as DS crumbled up a load of dried cereal onto the carpet. Bloody godsend! Grin

sethstarkaddersmum · 22/09/2010 16:08

that's strange, our Black & Decker Dustbuster is great.

an old fashioned Eubank carpet sweeper is useful as well for picking up bits in-between hoovings

katkouta · 22/09/2010 16:08

I threw mine in the bin just 2 days ago! YANBU

SlightlyJaded · 22/09/2010 16:10

which one do you have Detective?

ConnorTraceptive · 22/09/2010 16:10

We have a rather industrial looking Dewalt one. Providing the battery is fully charged it's ok however I certainly couldn't do my stairway with as promised by DH when he presented it to me all bright eyed and waggy tailed.

twilight3 · 22/09/2010 16:14

YABU, I'm on my fourth but as I had bad experiences before I pushed the boat the last time and got the B&D Dustbuster Pivot -magnificent!

LIZS · 22/09/2010 16:16

We've got through a fair few - today bought a Vax one for £25 in Morrisons , so we'll see...

DetectivePotato · 22/09/2010 16:17

Its a Black and Decker one, just says Dustbuster 3.6v. It was kicking out dust behind it but DH washed the filter and its fine again.

LastOrdersAgain · 22/09/2010 16:18

I have a very cheap £9 one from Argos, just to get the bits of cat litter up when cat runs out of tray.

Its fab! I never empty it, and it just keeps on sucking up!

It needs recharging more than I would like, but thats not a prob.

tvfriend · 22/09/2010 16:21

After loads of crap cheap ones I got the 'Dustbuster Extreme' - all 9.6v of it and very good it is too (but around £50ish).

sethstarkaddersmum · 22/09/2010 16:24

mine is 4.8 v.
I think the more volts you have the better, yes?

BertieBotts · 22/09/2010 16:26

I'm pretty sure I just have this one and it's great - picks up all manner of toddler induced crumbs from all surfaces, I even used it as my main hoover for about three weeks and it was okay (though a pain)

It doesn't pick up bigger crumbs though like whole cornflakes.

DebsCee · 22/09/2010 16:48

I've never had a B&D one last over 18 months with minimal daily use. Last time the B&D went on a go slow I got a Dyson handheld (using a discount voucher) which at 2 years on is still running perfectly, but much more £££, IMO though worth every penny.

grottielottie · 22/09/2010 17:18

The Dyson one is fantastic, although it only runs for 6 minutes but will pick up loads.

queribus · 22/09/2010 17:23

Another vote for the Dyson. It's brilliant!

dumbelina · 22/09/2010 17:31

What you need is the Dyson one. As the other posters say, 'tis awesome. I used it to hoover out the bottom of our toy chest the other week (don't ask) and I could see the dust quivering about a foot before the dyson got near it.

idontlikemondays · 22/09/2010 18:11

Noooooo - you need one of these from Argos - absolutely brilliant and no need to charge it up and all that faff...

tassisssss · 22/09/2010 18:13

we have the most expensive black and decker one and i love it!

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 22/09/2010 18:13

I have the dyson one as well, I have told my DH never to ask me to choose between him and it.

ayjayjay · 22/09/2010 18:16

i find my dustbuster fab at distracting my 11 week DD. Whenever she's mid screaming fit I turn it on and she magically stops and sometimes even goes asleep. Shes an odd un!

SlightlyJaded · 22/09/2010 20:04

oooh going to google the dyson and the dustbuster extreme now... I really don't mind paying a bit more but thus far, the performance has been pathetic. I wonder if my expectations are unreasonable Hmm Wouldn't be the first time....

avjayjay - doesn't sound at all strange to me. My DD had terrible reflux as a baby and never slept. The only thing that would get her off was the vacuum cleaner turned on full blast. In the end I bought a CD (I kid you not) of 'white noise' from ebay, and we played it on a loop at full blast in her bedroom. And another time we drove from our home in West London, to the edges of East London, with the radio tuned in to static at full blast for the whole journey. Seems like madness when I look back but it absolutely worked and it was absolutely the only thing that worked.

But I digress....

gtamom · 23/09/2010 10:09

I love mine. It is a Black & Decker rechargeable cordless hand vac.

jenny60 · 23/09/2010 10:11

The Dyson is awesome: mine always goes for longer than 10 minutes and it picks up everything. Get one!

DomesticG0ddess · 23/09/2010 10:18

I have got something similar to idon'tlikemondays, it's a bit more expensive, but got brilliant reviews www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001YFSIT0/ref=oss_product. It's great - have had it about a year, have no problems with it and saves me getting the hoover out every day. You hardly ever need to charge it. But obviously you can only use it on floors.
