PFB DD started reception two weeks ago (only been doing half days). She came out of school today for 3rd time with NO cardigan - that is 3 fully named cardigans that have gone missing in the last 2 weeks - not even a case of coming out in someone elses by mistake. I went and looked in the cloakroom and the classroom - completely gone. Teacher sympathetic but said there is not much she can do.. I did have a chat with dd about looking after her things but she said tried and she hung it on her peg and it wasn't there at home time.
Now I'm not naive I expected some things to get lost or mixed up which is why I brought 3 cardigans and sewed in labels and wrote name on wash label but what am I meant to put her in tomorrow?? I can't afford to keep buying cardigans for them to keep disappearing. GRR Angry

Ds 7 yo has lost a fleece and 2 polo shirts. I can accept he lost the fleece at school but he hasn't come home naked so where the hell are his tops? I'm fed up.

Live in hope ladies, DD lost a brand new (clearly named) jumper in the first term of 2007. At the time it cost me $83 to replace it. I was not terribly happy, as you would imagine.

Last week, lo and behold, a miracle, the very same jumper turned up in Lost Property!

I might add, it has been very well worn by the thief person who has had it for nigh on 4 years. Its all lovely and bobbly now. Angry

This year we are down two new polo shirts, a House polo and two shirts. All named. Surely the parents, or the children themselves must notice the name tags?

Agree epicfail, we've never had anything of that value go missing but last year DD had an expensive ski jacket (to go skiing in) misappropriated from her peg at school. Just before the end of the summer term it turned up. Very worn and grubby and had obviously seen some hard use on the slopes.
I would notice if DD came home with anotehr person's belongings, I wonder if some parents tell their children to steal to order.

Yes - there are a few families who I can see probably have quite an umm.. chaotic home life - I'm keen not to blame anyone though as it could be any number of reasons mostly perfectly innocent. Just very frustrated as I thought I had it covered.
Also as DD is pfb I'm probably more aware of this type of thing - by the time dd2 gets to school I probably won't blink. I did manage to find a cardi in Tescos its a size too big but better than nothing... ho hum

DS is now in yr3. I have got so fed up with this, that if he comes home with no jumper, he doesn´t get a clean one the next day. I put an extra tshirt/vest under his polo, a jacket (if it isn't missing too) and tell him he must look for the other one. I have always named his stuff and it still goes AWOL.

Another mum told me that she just riffles through the lost property and swaps her DSs jumpers once they are too small for bigger ones. I now riffle the lost property weekly and if there are jumpers with no names on them I "borrow" them until his turn up. Sorry, but I can't afford to buy new jumpers every time his go missing. I alway put them back eventually.

rifle not riffle

Welcome to school! (and get used to it!)
My ds went through this, he lost 3 school jumpers (labelled) in a month. On the last day of school, he wore the new one for next term, and guess what..... Yup, lost it! By this time I was absolutely FUMING! This is a village school, where practically everyone is considerably better off than me!
Next term, having had more than enough, I got a black marker, and wrote his initials on the outside of the back of the neck yoke in 2 inch letters! Amazingly, he still lost it, but I managed to collar the small child who nicked took it by mistake, as he entered the playground next morning wearing it! Mother was not best pleased, but there was no refuting the evidence it was ours!
The trouble is disreputable parents cut out the labels!

By day 4 of reception DD1 had no cardigans left at all! (And they all had her name in.)

So I bought some more at ASDA (sod the blinkin' logo'ed ones!) and now, into her second week, they've all turned up and I have school cardigans coming out my ears.

I think it's just one of those annoying things...

scrappydappydoo · 23/09/2010 16:59

Woohoo - we have one cardi back!!

I would suggest you write the name inside the sleeve cuff, collar, - basically anywhere that it cant be cut out.

also don't buy logo'd clothing if not necessary as that is what is nicked.

My friend has the logo'd school cardigan. Our uniform is blue with a red and white badge. She has sewn a red flower on the collar so it is easy to spot on another child.

on school coats put a small keyring on the zipper - again so it is easily noticed (and if any teacher is asked why it is there, you can inform them that it is to "help" the child pull the zip up on their coat so they wont need to ask the teacher Wink )
