to not want to do a local newspaper article?

I have recently become involved with a charity that brings groups of disadvantaged children from abroad to stay with families in the UK. I'm quite happy with the charity's aims and to help out with fundraising etc and our family are going to host a child who arrives next month.
The concern that I have is that the organiser has asked if our family would be prepared to do an article for our local paper, including photos.
My gut instinct is to say no, for two reasons:

  1. I'm uneasy about having personal information such as my children's names / photos in the press; and
  2. This is the first time we're done anything like this and I quite like to just be able to get on with it and not have to talk to reporters etc. Maybe in the future when we're 'old hands' I might feel more confident, but not now. I've told the organiser that I'll think about it, but really I want to say no although this will probably be frowned upon. Am I being unreasonable to think like this? Would welcome other people's opinions as I just don't know whether I am or not. Thanks.

Just say no for the reasons you've mentioned, reason 2 in particular.

I'm sure they'll have other families they can ask.

Thanks weblette. Apparently they don't have other families in the specific circulation area of the paper. Most of the other families are in the next county.

Hmm in that case why not be very specific - a quick comment once the visit is over with no mention of your dcs. They can get a pic of just the child at an activity.

Local papers tend not to be too in depth, our local one's on such a showstring they print what you give them pretty much verbatim!

If you talk through your concerns with the charity's press person I'm sure they'll be sympathetic.

BTW Well done for doing this :)
