To wonder why people keep pitbulls when they are so often in the news attacking people

I saw this re a little girl in Derry. The poor thing was attacked by 2 pitbulls. I am aware that the owners are responsible for the dog but why is it always pitbulls who seem to be in the news - whay not labradors, mongrels etc

Sorry - as well as eight others and crosses of the same (10 in total of course).

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 23/09/2010 17:43

If they also wouldn't run across my path when I'm running and trip me up that would be good to.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 23/09/2010 17:44

And if the dogwalkers would pay attention to the ten dogs getting in everyone elses way instead of just gabbing on.

tethersend · 23/09/2010 17:49

"If it is not down to the dog, then why shouldn't 'certain breeds' live among us?"

This still does not mean it's the dog's fault- merely that they are incompatible. It is not a tiger's fault that it shouldn't live amongst us. Tigers do what tigers do. So do some dogs. To assume that any kind of legislation covering a certain breed -or indeed any objection to them being kept as domestic pets- is meant as a punitive measure towards dogs is bizarre.

thesunshinesbrightly · 23/09/2010 17:51

It's tough really isn't it.

If you don't like dogs stay in.

midori1999 · 23/09/2010 17:53

The point is, there is nothing wrong with these breeds. They are dogs, the same as all other dogs and if correctly raised have the ability to live in a family home just like any other dog breed.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 23/09/2010 17:53

We should just ban dogs from all urban areas.

tethersend · 23/09/2010 17:58

midori, a series of attacks on people by pitbulls prompted the legislation, did it not? Please correct me if I'm wrong (I know you will, Valhalla Wink). It was not as a result of someone 'not liking' a certain breed.

Your proviso if correctly raised is obviously a huge one. If incorrectly raised, these type of dogs can do much more damage to a human being than an incorrectly raised chihuahua for example.

porcamiseria · 23/09/2010 18:03

agree with expat

vile people tend to have vile dogs

midori1999 · 23/09/2010 18:19

Pitbull terriers are a type, not a breed and many many thousands of dogs that could be considered 'type' live harmoniously in happy families. It is the fact that morons like to get hold of these types of dog and use them as status symbols and weapons that give the type a bad name. Valhalla will know more about the attacks preceeding the DDA than me, but one thing is clear, the DDA hasn't actually done much good and healthy, well socialised dogs are being put to sleep as a result of it.

Obviously a big dog is physically capable of doing more damage than a toy breed, but any breed of dog if raised incorrectly has the potential to do huge damage. That even includes my lovely Golden Retrievers. Some breed are more reactive than others, but this also includes a lot of breeds that are not banned.

What would help are stricter laws regarding dog breeding and owning. More than just a dog licence, which is useless in the form in which it exists in NI.

BaresarkBunny · 23/09/2010 18:45

Vallhala - Ahh I didn't think of her being not in the UK. Sorry to be a pain but could you explain what PTS and GSD is?

ShinyAndNew · 23/09/2010 18:47

Put to sleep and German Shepard Dog

ShinyAndNew · 23/09/2010 18:56

Some PitBull type dogs Smile I can see how they are nothing but agressive killing machines, no matter whose hands they are in. Can you?
