to think my nanny is pushing her luck?

Nanny employed about 3 months weeks and has had 2 and a half weeks off sick so far...

Reason for absence is run-of-the-mill virus.

This is making life difficult for us and v disruptive for my 18 month old daughter. AIBU for thinking this is a bit out of order?

It depends if they are ill or not.

geordieminx · 20/09/2010 16:22

Would you have prefered she came to work, possibly infected your daughter and was poorly whilst looking after her there therefore not able to give her 100 %?

Greensleeves · 20/09/2010 16:23

is she faking? or is she ill?

do you have reason to believe she is faking>

If not, then YABU. People get ill. It's one of the downsides of employing other human beings.

Or would you rather she struggled into work, did a piss-poor job, made herself iller and gave the virus to your dd?

fedupwithdeployment · 20/09/2010 16:24

What does the contract say about sick pay? If she is not genuinely ill or a bit of a hypochondriac, she might get better when she is faced with SSP.

Suggest a serious return to work chat, to get to bottom of illness. Also suggest you get doctor's note.

bigfootbeliever · 20/09/2010 16:24

Could be just bad luck but.... some people do like to take the piss don't they?

Have you got a contract? Anything about sick-leave in there.

Where I work, if you have so many days off ill in a certain timeframe, they can make you see someone in Occupational Health, but if you employ her directly I dont know what recourse you have.

GypsyMoth · 20/09/2010 16:24

YABU.....jeez

pearlsandtwinset · 20/09/2010 16:30

agree with fed up. If she has genuinely been ill then you have had a run of bad luck. If she hasn't, then there are lots of employment bits and pieces than can support you.

YANBU to question it.

LinenBasket · 20/09/2010 16:37

is the 2 and half weeks all in one go or dribs and drabs days here and there?

If all in one go, i would presume she really has got a virus. If all made up of odd days then i would be more suss.

frakkinnakkered · 20/09/2010 16:49

2,5 weeks straight she should be providing you with a docs note. 2,5 weeks in odd days is suspicious.

Are you just paying SSP? Or do you have some full pay written into the contract?

Marjee · 20/09/2010 18:25

I didn't understand your op, has she been there 3 weeks or 3 months? Its hard to tell if yabu or not, she could be unlucky enough to be ill just after starting a new job or she could be taking the piss, time will tell!

ConnorTraceptive · 20/09/2010 18:35

Agree that if it's odd she may well be takiung the piss. If it's two weeks ask for a doctors note

Haliborange · 20/09/2010 18:44

YANBU to question this.

I think people have different ideas of what constitutes "ill" and I have known some who will take a couple of days off every time they get a cold which is clearly ridiculous.

When you took up her references what did they say about her absence record?

People do get ill yes, but if she is one of those who calls in at the first sneeze she is probably not going to be reliable enough.
