WHSmith - Newspapers with 'Page 3' images of women

Should MN approach WHSmith, and see if it is prepared to sign up to the 'Let Girls be Girls' campaign, by agreeing to stop selling newspapers with 'Page 3' images of women?

Blimey, excuse the typos!!!

Weeeelll The Sun and Daily Star have their half naked pics on page 3 so in theory if you don't want to see the pics you dont open the paper to that page. Hardly rocket science imo.

Others like Daily Sport, Nutz, FHM etc are usually up higher where children can not see them, or aleast if they aren't they should/are meant to be.

Page 3 has never offended me, it's aimed at adult males to get their jollies not at children.

page 3 is completely unrelated to letting girls be girls. Infact it lets women be women in whichever way they choose. Just because that way is not one you would pick for yourself doesn't make it wrong. Just because you see it as objectification, as long as the girls go into it informed and willingly (some people do aspire to be glamour models!) where is the harm.

I fear the underground trafficking far more with regards to the damage on womens freedom, than a harmless pick of a pair of boobs in a national newspaper.

prozacfairy · 21/09/2010 12:22

In fairness Pinkgrasshopper Wh Smiths are in dire financial straits so probably can't afford to reduce their newspaper/magazine range lol.

Aiming Playboy merchandise at children seems so wrong to me and Confused because you have to be 18 to buy the porn magazine don't you?

And if you want to ditch Nutz, Zoo etc surely same should go more the girr magazines like that More, Cosmopolitan who sometimes have near naked pictures of men and print some very sexist/detrimental articles about them. Fairs fair and all that....

prozacfairy · 21/09/2010 12:25

Daily Sport kept fairly up high where I live. It is meant to be, AFAIK.

Also [applauds Coraltoes] there are ALOT worse things to get upset about.

I think The Sun should stop page 3, not that they will ofcourse. Lads mags are marketed as such but i fail to see what a woman in a newspaper with her boobs out has to do with anything news related,oh except for the condesending 'Zoe 23 from Liverpool thinks A,B,C about todays headline' good of them to allow her an opinion and print it so we know she's more than a pair of boobs Hmm.

A newspaper should be that imo, and a Lads mag a Lads mag, if men want/need Sad to look at naked boobs each day in print then they should buy lads mags or other soft porn options. Rather than comming accross them (pardon the expresion) conviniently in their newspaper of choice and for children to be able to pick up copies of the comic in shops and homes.

Not that The Sun will ever stop page 3 ofcourse as it obv boosts sales, but it's sad that it's so commonplace for women to be objectified like that in what sells itself as a newspaper Sad

I love the "Keely's opinion on such and such is..." always makes me snort with laughter. I find it more offensive that they all blatantly lie about their ages. Yeah love ofcourse you're 19. Hmm

sethstarkaddersmum · 21/09/2010 12:36

very well put Violet!
