i've broken my britax b smart by overloading the bottom with mince and wine. (i know, why did i buy all that mince?)

the brake is all warped and will never work again unless replaced.

i now have to go into mothercare today to talk about getting it mended. to add to my embarrasment, this is the second base i've had to return. the first one was faulty from the start. oh, and they had to order a new 'hubcap' for me- so this is the third problem.

AIBU to expect a huge bill for this?

well..I'm afraid if you broke it by overloading it then you should pay surely?

katkit · 18/09/2010 08:49

yes i should.. any idea how much it's going to be though?

I don't blame you for not wanting to though!

Sorry, no idea Sad

Maybe it won't be too much though, I hope!

katkit · 18/09/2010 08:51

thanks.... i'm such a muppet!

LOL at the mince! :o

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 18/09/2010 08:53

It doesn't sound like it is very sturdy and well made really!!

tutu100 · 18/09/2010 08:53

How much mince and wine did you buy Smile!

With any luck they may not charge you. Are you sure there isn't a fault with b-smart chassis'? I have used and abused many a buggy by overloading it and they have all withstood the punishment.

backwardpossom · 18/09/2010 08:59

I'd be questioning the sturdiness of the buggy to be honest!

shopping baskets have a wight limit. however i would've expected the basket to collaspe, not the brake to break.

katkit · 18/09/2010 10:00

the instructiosn do say there's a 5kg limit, and i was well over, but it doesn't take much- 2 bottles of wine, 1400g of mince (special offer!) carrots, parsnips, blah blah.. it adds up to waay too much. but i was still a bit shocked that it broke, after all it can carry heavy babies.

but yes after 3 mishaps it really does seem to be a bit of a pants buggy.

OP posts:
katkit · 18/09/2010 10:01

should've said- 5kg limit to what you can put in the base. but as i thought my dd's not that huge it'd be balance things out.

OP posts:
MisterW · 18/09/2010 10:43

You're not carrying your DD in the base so it's irrelevant how much she weighs. It broke because you overloaded it so of course you should expect to pay for the repair.

backwardpossom · 18/09/2010 13:02

You're right, MisterW, but I'd expect the basket to break rather than the actual brake to break.

ApocalypseFlangePop · 18/09/2010 13:09

I often saw a mum who had 4 dcs under 4.

She could often be seen puffing up to nursery with her old battered pram, she'd have one in the seat, two in the basket and one on the hood. Grin

Your pram is pants, i'd want an exchange tbh.

I used to work for Mothercare many years ago so it may not be the same system now. However, we would have sent your pram off for repair where it would then be assessed by an engineer and a report would done to let us know whether the problem was caused by misue/abuse and whether or not they would fix it.

booyhoo · 18/09/2010 13:29

sounds like the brake isn't sufficent for the buggy if you ahev already had it replaced once. fwiw, my dog sits in the basket of my buggy and he weights about 10k. never any problems.

Marrow · 18/09/2010 13:29

misuse

katkit · 18/09/2010 13:40

thanks all.... i think i might at least attempt and get it fixed/ replaced without me having to pay.off to mothercare now. wish me luck.

Just looked at the britax site all the instructions I could find for all the different pushchair's say a max load of 4kg which is useless that's not even a nappy bag in most cases. But I would expect the basket to break not the pushchair. I guess it is the b dual you have as it is the only one with hub caps so that must be made to take a lot of weight. So unless you doped the wine and meat from a great height I can't really see how this could have happened. If you need to do this kind of shopping a lot I suggest you buy a pram with a metal basket
