to think that your advert is not letting 'girls be girls'?

Just seen your advertisement for 'LaFilleUnique' on Mumsnet news. Three little girls scrolled past, looking just like adult models. AIBU to think that this goes against the Mumsnet campaign to 'let girls be girls'? No way would my daughter be wearing hip-level skinny jeans, or a £70 silk top. Not a question of price; but suitability for a little girl. Anyone agree, or AIBU?

Hi catok - I have just looked at the website and yes, I think YABU in that most of the things are very beautiful, french-styled clothes and although they're expensive, you could create the same look in H & M.

Just because jenas are low rise, doens't mean their midriff will be showing - they could wear a long tunic over the top.

what worried me more, is that they have made the little girl models up to look like mini adults and not a natural look, like little girls should be. It was quite scary actually.

Surely your arguement of 'letting girls be girls' doesn't really have anything to do with the cost of a £70 silk top. I'm sure if most people had lots of money, they may choose to buy their children clothes that are expensive. IMO, more expensive clothing can often be of better and longer lasting quality.

musicposy · 18/09/2010 13:44

I don't have a problem with the clothes but I don't like the make up on them. I like things that look more natural, and prefer shots where the children are being children and having fun, not posing and pouting.

curryfreak · 18/09/2010 14:13

YANBU. What an own goal!

msyikes · 18/09/2010 14:43

Don't know about the ad but one of the first images on the site is of a small girl and she looks like she's wearing make up- yuk!

Mumsnet!!! what exactly does 'girls being girls' mean then?? Does letting girls be girls mean getting them into make up and designer clothes??

Also pmsl at 'La Fille Unique', about the least 'classy' name I can possibly imagine!!

beagle101 · 18/09/2010 14:51

Good grief YADNBU! I just had a look at the site and although I thought some of the clothes were quite nice and age appropriate the amount of make up on those little girls was just awful.

pinkgrasshopper · 18/09/2010 14:59

YADNBU. Awful to see that little blonde girl in make-up. I think the clothes are quite nice but I'm afraid £45+ for a babygro is DBU IMO!! (Another point altogether I know...)

luciemule · 18/09/2010 15:17

'la fille unique' means 'only child' who is a girl. Strange thing to call a clothing company. 'Le fils unique' is 'only child' when it's a boy.

cate16 · 18/09/2010 15:37

Not only to the models wear make up they sell dead baby lamb Astrakan coats too. :(

catok · 18/09/2010 23:45

Thanks folks! It was the strangely adult little girls that made me feel most uncomfortable, especially in the light of Mumsnet's campaign. I'm happy to spend more on my daughter as long as the clothes are of good quality and she looks like a 9year-old.

This company is a disgrace!

It's selling real animal fur: www.la-fille-unique.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=fur

and, as cate16 says, astrakan: www.la-fille-unique.com/luxury-astrakan-coat.html

Angry

Mumsnet HQ, please sever ties with the company!

Anenome · 18/09/2010 23:56

YANBU....Just had a look..the girls have been photographed in a sort of editorial way...like adult (read 18 year old) models that you would see in Vogue...deadpan stare at the camera....not ok....I dont want my girls thinking they need to display a jaded ennui in order to look cool. And the lipgloss!

HelenMumsnet · 19/09/2010 10:09

Morning all. And thanks for your comments - we'll take a look at this.

CommonSenseSuze: you have mail!

meltedchocolate · 19/09/2010 10:34

Shock NOOOOOOOOOO! The girl 'Petite Look 8' on 'Buy the look' has blardy lip gloss on and her hair all adult like! Shock Shock

Some of the outfits are lovely and just a child version of adults clothes so not too bad but that is not cool!

lazarusb · 19/09/2010 12:16

Definitely don't like this site and wouldn't buy from it on principle. Little girls don't need make-up :(

Onetoomanycornettos · 19/09/2010 12:20

I don't think the girls are over-sexualized in any way, but their look is too fashion/adult, and the make-up inappropriate. So, I hate the styling and wouldn't want my children to look like that whatsoever.

lanismum · 19/09/2010 12:36

The kids on the Boden/Next/Boots/M&S/mothercare sites will have all had make up to some extent applied before the shoots too, ok some of the LaFilleunique models do have more than usual, but its still not that much?

CommonSenseSuze · 19/09/2010 17:00

HelenMumsnet, I don't have email. I think you said on the other thread that you've emailed someone else. Thanks.

Missy8c · 19/09/2010 21:07

Just looked at the site. I can't believe they are selling fur and the repulsive astrakan. Does Mumsnet really want to be associated with this?

JustineMumsnet · 21/09/2010 14:00

Hi all - update on this...

We passed your comments on to La Fille Unique and they have replied to say that they will be removing the stock from their site ASAP.
They told us that when they ordered the stock thye thought it would be fake.

We won't run any further ads until this is done.

Thanks for the input.
