Get a kitten.

There was a huge one on my floor and the kitten is in the process of killing and eating it.

Normally I would have rescued it if I'd spotted it firt but it was half dad by the time I spotted it.

Its all gone

Problem is when kitten grows up they don't want to know about spiders just bloody birds, mice, moles and wait for it ..............a toad.

Someone at work bought in lots of conkers today and told people to put them in corners of rooms, apparently this helps.

Our cat loves a spider snackette too, flies are scoffed with gusto too.

LowLevelWhiinging · 17/09/2010 20:53

You have to have a way of ensuring it's a Killer Kitten tho. Some are just as pathetic as me.

Our mog used to like watching and patting them but never actually tackled. I do wish she would...

winnybella · 17/09/2010 20:56

Unless you get a cat like mine, huge black mean-looking male rescued from streets of Harlem. He once saw a tiny spider on the floor, jumped about 4 feet in the air and then jumped across king sized bed (without touching it) and run out of the room.

My 11-year-old-girl-tabby is a spider-muncher, too. Many mornings we wake up to find a spider leg or two lying, bodiless, on the carpet. My 12-year-old boy cat, on the other hand, is terrified of 'em. He just runs away and hides.

jardins · 17/09/2010 21:07

Peachygirl oddly enough the conkers seem to work. Last Autumn we got some huge spiders in our house. We put mounds of conkers in most rooms (it kept my 5 year old DS busy) and .... no more spiders. Weird and wonderful. Needless to say this year we have been scuttling around the school grounds picking up conkers to get ready for the great invasion.

electra · 17/09/2010 21:10

I thought spiders carry tapeworm though? Or is that a myth?

emptyshell · 17/09/2010 21:21

My cat would just look at the spider, then look at you with a "what do you expect me to do - you're the slave around here" and bugger off back to bed.

On the other hand... watching a three legged cat try to catch a moth and repeatedly fall over and lose her balance is flipping hilarious in an evil way.

I did work with a girl once who'd trained a bunch of Y1 boys to pick up spiders in a pot with a bit of card, take them outside and put them down nicely without her ever having to see them!

Blatherskite · 17/09/2010 21:21

What if you are arachnophobic and allergic to cats like me ?

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 17/09/2010 21:55

I'd rather smash the little bastards to smithereens with volume 14 of the encyclopaedia britannica!

CupcakesHay · 17/09/2010 21:58

My cats were great when they were younger, but now are much lazier and kind of get bored - but they still kind of alert me to them with clucking noises... and then scamper off for a sleep leaving me to feel bad as I drop a dictionary on the poor spider....

AllGoodNamesGone · 17/09/2010 22:07

See, I'd be too scared that the cat might decide to bring me a mangled spider as a gift [shocked]

AllGoodNamesGone · 17/09/2010 22:07

Shock !!!!

millimurphy · 19/09/2010 08:34

Padded cell is the answer - not many spiders in them...

Mowiol · 19/09/2010 09:46

I've heard the conker theory too- apparently it's the vapours from the chestnut oil that put them off.
You can buy chestnut oil and I've read that if you make a solution of chestnut oil and water, put it in a spray bottle and spray round window ledges, door frames etc. it keeps the little sods out.
Spider ""smell" through their feet (no nose you see!) so won't walk over anything chestnut oily as they don't like it - allegedley.
I love a good spider thread!
Our cats would probably play with them then get bored and look for something more "substantial" e.g. a nice mouse etc. Grin

ragged · 19/09/2010 09:47

pet rats enthusiastically eat spiders too.
Just so you know Grin.

SoupDragon · 19/09/2010 10:10

of course, one flaw in your plan is that, unless your ct has bee bitten by a radioactive spider, they can't climb sheer walls to get the hundreds on the ceiling. in addition, if your cat has the Killer gene, it will have murdered and eaten the radioactive spider before getting bitten.

RustyBear · 19/09/2010 10:11

Our Year 6 are off to their activity holiday this morning -apparently the lodges where they stay are full of spiders, so we were swapping spider stories on Friday.

One of the Year 6 teachers investigated screams from a lodge one evening to find a bunch of cowering Year 6s imploring her to kill the massive spider in the middle of the floor.

Being a conscientious teacher she gave them the whole 'kindness to living things, no need to kill it, just put it outside' speech and then, being a wimp not brave enough herself, called for a colleague to come and dispose of it.

Which they did, with one accurate stamp.

And another colleague hung conkers all round her spider infested garage. Last week her husband pointed out to her the large network of webs beautifully woven around them...

pinkbasket · 19/09/2010 10:18

I tried to get my cat to dispose of a spider and she was more scared than me.

GlendaTheGrizzlyPiggy · 19/09/2010 10:34

Mowiol Thanks for that tip. We've got some huge spiders stomping round at the moment and I can't find conkers anywhere.

The dogs usually quite good at catching them but only if they're running around, if they're sat still the dozy begger won't bother with them Hmm.
