To think it riduculous that parents in my area allow their kids to do this

I live in the outskirts of a small city...it's a very nice area, lot's of nice people and nice houses. There are 3 schools within less than a mile's radius of my home.

Every morning I walk DD to her school which is 5 mins walk away...my 2 year old DD comes too, either walking or in a buggy.

We are in constant danger from kids as young as 3 and 4 who ride scooters and bikes to the nearby CofE school (we don't go there).

These kids are hurtling ahead of their Mum's or Dads on very narrow paths, the parents are almost never close enough to stop them as they crash towards me or my kids...the parents never apologise or even attempt to slow the kids down...and it is ME who has to dodge THEM! Angry

The road is a very busy main one...often jammed with traffic and to me it looks like an accident waiting to happen.

Should I speak to the CofE school about it? Maybe suggest they mention to parents about safety for pedestrians? Or AIBU?

Lol.

GypsyMoth · 17/09/2010 20:11

kids in our area do it too......doubt the school can stop it....and also doubt its just the 'CofE' schoolkids as well!!

ragged · 17/09/2010 20:12
Biscuit
GypsyMoth · 17/09/2010 20:12

oh yes,and LOL too

Greensleeves · 17/09/2010 20:13

Shock how very dare people let their children ride scooters, in a nice area full of nice people and nice houses!

I'd be surprised if the school could/would do anything. The children are off school property in the care of their parents.

StreathamHillary · 17/09/2010 20:13

I would give a 'heads up' to St Christopher.

nameymcnamechange · 17/09/2010 20:16

Children should only be allowed to ride scooters to school in a scummy area full of scummy houses and scummy people. Imvho. Gavel.

GypsyMoth · 17/09/2010 20:16

wdoes 'gavel' mean?....have wondered this before!!hat

nameymcnamechange · 17/09/2010 20:19

Sorry. Is an old Cod-ism. Means end of debate (as in gavel at the end of an auction). Its Mumsnet shorthand as is the line under

__

so was being ironic.

Although I do actually think op is being silly.

nameymcnamechange · 17/09/2010 20:19

Or, of course, gavel when a judge passes sentence.

onimolap · 17/09/2010 20:20

There's a serious point here too. Handlebars are at the height of other children's faces.

How many facial injuries is the acceptable number in any area (posh or scummy)?

Even quite large children can temporarily lose control. It's an accident waiting to happen in crowded areas.

Anenome · 17/09/2010 20:21

Well ok! Maybe I worded it badly...I said it was "nice" because you might assume the area was rough and so...sorry to ASSUME this...but areas with lower incomes DO have more road accidents. It is a fact!

It's FULL of proffesionals who have an education and SHOULD be aware of sodding road safety! MINE and THEIRS!
Darn you're as bad as they say on here!

OP posts:
cupcakesandbunting · 17/09/2010 20:21

Again. Lol.

Jenijo · 17/09/2010 20:22

Gavel means 'end of' basically!

Although, on this occasion, I kinda agree with the OP! It isn't a class thing and it isn't a CofE thing either, but the scooters are a PITA! I have lost count of the times, I have had a scooter in the heel!

In fact, our primary sent out a letter asking parents not to bring scooters to school.

Anenome · 17/09/2010 20:23

Thank you Onimolap!

My point IS valid whether people like my wording or not!

I bet some people here do exactly what I am complaining about!

cupcakesandbunting · 17/09/2010 20:23

OP you're doing yourself no favours coming out with tosh like that! Only thickos and proles ride scooters is the long and short of what you're saying. And heavens to Betsy we might think you live in a rough area!

I never mentioned the fact that it is a CofE as a JUDGEMENT! It was only a way of distinguishing from the other schools! Our CofE is a nice school! I would have gone there but no places...we're happy where we are though.

Well, yanbu because parents should teach their children to use their scooters & bikes safely, and that means watching out for other people on the pavement.

If they can't use them safely then they shouldn't be on them.

None of the school's business though.

witlesssarah · 17/09/2010 20:28

Have you considered that one of the reasons the road is busy is because too many people are driving their kids to school. Its good for kids to learn that there are other ways of getting around.

CommanderCool · 17/09/2010 20:28

Oh my kids hurtle to school scattering pedestrians as they go.

We have a long round tripto school and nursery though and it enables us to go in gout rather than walk.

They haven't hit anyone though. Well not yet.

Anenome · 17/09/2010 20:28

STAYFROSTY...I get that lord do I get that!

I have seen other people on MN mentioning the kind of area they're speaking of as relevant to their point though!

I suspect this place is not very welcoming to newcomers though.

Bit much inverted snobbery for my taste.

And what is wrong with saying its a nice area?

Why do people assume then that I am attacking the bloody working classes? I grew up on a frigging council estate!

Oh come ON! Children not being allowed to go to school on scooters because of occasionally having incredibly minor accidents? I had a scooter in the heel just the other day. Didn't kill me. Surely this is elf and safety gorn mad?
