to think that schools should jolly well get their punctuation right in their newsletters?

Just seen a newsletter from the primary school that ds will go to next year. I was surprised to see several errors with apostrophes, in particular two wrong uses of it's and its and another apostrophe before rather than after the 's'.

I know it may seem petty but surely a school should get its punctuation right?!

Head teacher at my previous school always said "we was". Drove me mad.

Cumfy - I cut and pasted! Smile

Mowgli, the quest continues then!

And if it's a primary school newsletter, the horror is probably made worse by its not merely being illiterate, but also on coloured paper, set in comic sans and sporting the sort of clip art that makes you long for the taste and discernment of your local Hallmark Cards stockist.

Our class newsletter had the apostrophe used wrongly every week last year. I eventually pointed this out to the class teacher (who wrote it) - said I was concerned she didn't know how to use it properly and therefore how could she possibly teach it correctly. It was used correctly from then on.

Nobody minds the occasional typo but teachers should not be making repeated grammar mistakes.

My daughter loves pretending to be a teacher - I give her a green pen (or red when I feel like it!) and tell her how many mistakes to look for. 'I'm sure there is many parents willing to cut back schools' foilage(sic) on the weekend of...'
I've returned one with dd's correct corrections so far! Grin

Never mind newsletters - how about a grammar school's (oh, the irony!) brochure?

In gold letters, large type, on the first page: 'Vision'
'A school that puts students at the heart of its' business.'

Its'! Its'! Ffs, that doesn't even exist in the English language!

Sorry about all the exclamation marks. This is a long-standing saga for me; three years ago I pointed out to the school that there was an error in their brochure; the sentence was at that time 'The heart of it's business' - a common error but appalling in the publicity material of a grammar school, I thought.
I was told that the mistake had been corrected for the next print run.
Imagine my horror, at the next PTA meeting, on discovering the new brochures with the above monstrosity for all to see.
Will be composing an email to the new Head, as soon as I can shake off this headache.

I know that this is an error by the typesetters, but I would hope that the new head of a grammar school would be keen enough to avoid being a laughing stock that he'd check anything going out with his school's name on the front in big colurful glossy letters.

YANBU but we get so many threads like this, it must be quite widespread

ZZZenAgain · 19/09/2010 00:49

I remember dd's school had an "autum display" with "autum leaves" "autum traditions" etc etc

MrsThisIsTheCadillacOfNailguns · 19/09/2010 19:40

On dd's first homework of the term we have found one spelling mistake, one incorrect tense and one grammatical error.I left school at 16 but spotted these mistakes easily.I have corrected them for when the homework is handed in.It won't make me popular but I don't care.I care about dd's education more.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 19/09/2010 21:33

How many times have I been tempted to do that, or to bring it up at a parents' evening? Never had the nerve < coward >.
I am emailing the headmaster tomorrow about its' though. Smile
