To split an infinitive in a thread title is an aberration up with which I shall not put!!

to quote paraphrase Winstone Churchill (I believe)

BertieBasset · 16/09/2010 20:22

To quote the OED

Some people believe that split infinitives are grammatically incorrect and should be avoided at all costs.

But there?s no real justification for their objection, which is based on comparisons with the structure of Latin. People have been splitting infinitives for centuries, especially in spoken English, and avoiding a split infinitive can sound clumsy. It can also change the emphasis of what?s being said

Yes entirely unreasonable. To split an infinitive is the ultimate sin.

JorrisBohnson · 16/09/2010 20:26

Painful too I should imagine.

Odysseus · 16/09/2010 20:26

Whilst we have a grammatical thread up and running - can anyone explain the gerundive to me please?

proudnglad · 16/09/2010 20:29

You have boldy gone where no other mumsnetter has gone before

BertieBasset · 16/09/2010 20:31

In linguistics, a gerundive is a particular verb form. The term is applied very differently to different languages; depending on the language, gerundives may be verbal adjectives, verbal adverbs, or finite verbs. Not every language has gerundives.

Can anyone tell I'm googling tonight, and getting a bit trigger happy with cut and paste?

Habbibu · 16/09/2010 20:32

Nothing wrong with split infinitive. It can be v useful.

Habbibu · 16/09/2010 20:33

But you are still wrong to buy the Daily Mail.

Odysseus · 16/09/2010 20:33

Specifically Ancient Greek Bertie?

MrsMadWriggle · 16/09/2010 20:36

Habbibu I started both threads at the same time - was interested to see which got the most objections and was the more heinous crime!

AIBU to really think that this is the best thread title ever? Grin

BertieBasset · 16/09/2010 20:38

Oh I haven't a clue - hence my cut and paste confession Grin

You sound as though you do have a clue though Odysseus so I shall agree with you completely.

MrsMadWriggle · 16/09/2010 20:38

Aww shucks BreastmilK - thanks

quiddity · 16/09/2010 20:39

We don't have gerundives in English. Do you mean gerunds?

BertieBasset · 16/09/2010 20:39

Sorry that was to Odysseus

But for what it's worth, I agree with FabLatte

Odysseus · 16/09/2010 20:40

That specific bit of Ancient Greek I've always struggled with Bertie Grin

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 16/09/2010 20:42

You're welcome. I dearly to duly compliment.

(When I was a child, I was locked in the cupboard under the stairs when I dared to ever to split an infinitive)
