to occasionally buy the Daily Mail?

I realise that this could be construed as Mumsnet suicide (am due a name change soon anyway!)

I'm not proud of it, I hide it at bottom of my basket in the local shop in case someone sees me buying it. I don't agree with the politics one bit - I've never voted Tory in my life.

But I just can't be arsed to read a broadsheet (apart from on a Sunday when I have more time). Years ago, I used to read the Guardian or the Independent, but I just want something to flick through during my lunchbreak.

Go on flame away. Maybe I need to be shamed into action.

Were you here for Daily Mailgate in August last year?

MrsMadWriggle · 16/09/2010 20:19

No I wasn't - been around since the beginning of the year

Tippychoocks · 16/09/2010 20:19

But why buy insane ramblings, wrong information and non-news, just for something to read? You could get all that from Heat Grin
Course if you're buying it to sneer at LJ then work away...

MrsMadWriggle · 16/09/2010 20:20

Tippychoocks I definitely sneer at it as I'm reading it. It's kind of knowing what the enemy thinks really

CAn anyone explain Daily Mailgate?

quiddity · 16/09/2010 20:21

YABU. You can read it for nothing online

pinkbasket · 16/09/2010 20:22

YANBU. You are a grown up and can buy what you want. There is an awful lot of links to the DM on here to say that a lot of mumsnetters say they never read it.

UnePrune · 16/09/2010 20:24

I know someone who sought out the DM in preference to The Sun, in order to vomit on it on her early morning commute.
I think that sums up my opinion too.
You can do what you like but it really is such a pile of crap: if I knew you, I'd be unable not to judge...

nameymcnamechange · 16/09/2010 20:26

Dail Mail started publishing threads from Mumsnet without permission. Not just random posts, but entire threads, complete with usernames and recognisable rl situations.

Quite a lot of Mumsnetters objected (understatement). And on those threads are all the arguments against the Daily Mail you could ever hope to read (mainly it boils down to the DM is misogynist and extremely right wing).

Makes for interesting reading.

MrsMadWriggle · 16/09/2010 20:26

uneprune I would hide it from you. It goes to the bottom of the recycling pile.

OP posts:
proudnglad · 16/09/2010 20:27

It's not about the non-news Tippy.

It's the pernicious, stealthy, sneering way it undermines women and many minority groups.

It's the hardcore/right wing, skewed news slant and the way politicians are under it's tthumb and in it's thrall because it has such an enormous middle Englad readership.

And...yes I do sometimes read it online because the features are very good!!!

bigfootbeliever · 16/09/2010 20:27

YABU - buy the Times for goodness sake.

proudnglad · 16/09/2010 20:28

'thumb'

'England'

Blush
MrsMadWriggle · 16/09/2010 20:30

But what else can I read?

I haven't got time to wade through a broadsheet. And besides, like proudnglad says the features are good.

The Express is for the over 70s and equally reactionary. And the red tops are like reading Biff and Chip's take on the news with their short words and short sentences.

There is a real market for a tabloid without the rightwing politics.

OP posts:
sharbie · 16/09/2010 20:31

ahem I read it (on line too) and I also used to buy heat
I don't agree with the politics though

MrsMadWriggle · 16/09/2010 20:31

bigfootbeliever isn't the Times equally right wing?

OP posts:
CupcakesHay · 16/09/2010 20:31

I'm staying at my parents.... and it's the daily mail every day (ugh - sorry to offend, not my cup of tea)

THAT being said... they do the word wheel everyday and i must admit, i've got into it and it's good fun!

MrsMadWriggle · 16/09/2010 20:32

I can have a good rant at Liz Jones - silly mare - too.

OP posts:
Tippychoocks · 16/09/2010 20:35

proudnglad, not sure why you're lecturing me on the DM Confused, I am obviously anti. My point was that the OP was not getting any kind of realistic news or information from the DM so may as well be reding Heat. Because the quality of information would be similar. But at least in Heat they reserve their bile for fat/skinny/non made up slebs

AmazingBouncingFerret · 16/09/2010 20:39

I like to read it so I can have a good rant about the articles. I likes a good rant me.

proudnglad · 16/09/2010 20:40

Wasn't lecturing honest, just kinda adding to your thoughts x

bigfootbeliever · 16/09/2010 20:42

Mrs MadWiggle I LOVE the Times but I do (gasp) vote Conservative. Grin

Lurve · 16/09/2010 20:42

Read the Guardian, there is an excellent family section on Saturdays.

bigfootbeliever · 16/09/2010 20:43

Sorry MrsMadWriggle - got your name wrong!

fuschiagroan · 16/09/2010 20:45

The Times isn't much better.

Read it for free online.
