to be scared of going to Ikea

Islandlady · 16/09/2010 19:18

They actually have something I like but I cant buy it on line so I have got to actually go to one of their stores.

I have only been once and that was to use the loo.

I asked on another forum about long queues and having to walk in the one direction but was told there are arrows on the floor but you dont have to walk the way they want you to.

I dont want to go but really like a wall lamp they have.

I need reassurance that all will be OK

The cov one is my local as well and I will ravel to either Nottingham or Wolverhampton to go worship at the Temple of Ikea.

We used to live near the WOlverhampton branch and we would get the stuff we needed (not wanted but needed) and often would sit for ten mins or so watching people try to get stuff into cars.

GetOrfMoiLand · 17/09/2010 12:46

I thought Justine came on then and said 'twat' but was a typo.

Was so engrossed in the scandinavian languages splinter faction argument, I forgot what the thread was about Grin

QS · 17/09/2010 12:58

I was more kindly inclined, thinking she was tryint to say "that". Grin

sorry for my part in derailing ......

tittybangbang · 17/09/2010 13:09

I live very near an Ikea and was thinking of setting myself up in business as a sort of Ikea 'sherpa'. It's like a second home to me Shock and I know all the short-cuts through the shop and how to locate what you want.

Anyone interested in hiring me out? Grin

QS · 17/09/2010 13:12

Tell you what, I will give you my shopping list, and wait in the cafe!! Grin

Mingg · 17/09/2010 13:22

I actually though that Justine was saying that "the scandinavian languages splinter faction argument" conversation was tat though she (possibly?)meant Ikea. Not sure now as she has pulled her comment

JulesJules · 17/09/2010 13:22

ROFL at Shirley's tealights. So true.

I got the strawberry flavoured ones and keep getting a waft of them when I open the cupboard, think "Must use those", close cupboard and forget. Until next time I open the cupboard...etc etc

Promise yourself a bag of Daim bar(s)when you get to the end and just give in to the whole experience. You'll be fine

MudandRoses · 17/09/2010 13:46

i went in there for some boxes and a bin and spent £177 yesterday. But actually, it was kind of fun, the daim tart and meatballs were delicious, and at 9 months pregnant, it's more exercise than i've had for weeks.

steph007 · 17/09/2010 13:48

Cats???!!! (see page 1) Confused

AlCrowley · 17/09/2010 14:01

I live about 20 minutes from an Ikea. I need to go this weekend/early next week to get some shelves.

I could always pick up one of the Optician lights and post it to you op??

Anniegetyourgun · 17/09/2010 14:16

I take an industrial tape measure and DS3, to make sure everything fits in the car and can actually be wrestled into place.

girlywhirly · 17/09/2010 14:31

I used to go to the Wembley one originally, awful journey, limited parking, stupid system of not being allowed to take your trolley to your car, so you had to wait for a loading area space to become available, queues of cars waiting and blocking the carpark; and a warehouse of stuff for delivery miles away.

Decided to try the new one at at Edmonton when it opened, annoyed at being charged for parking, which they claimed was to help save the environment! Decided to save both environment and petrol by not going again.

New Milton Keynes store opened. Loads of parking, warehouse so big it took ages to find what I wanted. Trolley direct to car to load up. Finding the place a bit of a challenge, even with their map. However, if I want to go to the central shopping mall, browsing around Ikea is easily limited and therefore spending is too.

Journeys to all three of these stores took about an hour from home, so not visited often. Although I could do with a new seat cushion for my Poang chair!

Rockbird · 17/09/2010 14:34

Because of you seines I ended up in ikea today Angry but was very excited to find that those tubes of marabou chocolate discs now come in Daim flavour! Om nom nom :)

MistyB · 17/09/2010 14:34

OP - I can understand the importance of the right lamp!!

I have been know to be in and out of Ikea with a list, cash and the 10 items or less queue in 20 minutes!!

Could you ask someone else to get it for you and post it to you - people on here are in and out frequently!!

Rockbird · 17/09/2010 14:35

That'd be swines, obviously :o

Islandlady · 17/09/2010 16:40

Alcrowley
ta for the offer I nearly took you up on that HOWEVER.

The wall light is for DH, he has been looking for months to find one he likes and he is a very picky so and so (it took 6 months for him to find a wall clock he liked)
we would not have considered Ikea but they had the bright idea of putting a catolgue through my letter box and the rest as they say is history

So if we HAVE to go across the water just to buy the light, then he is going to have to accept that after we get it I shall be going into John Lewis, Debenhams and LUSH (YAY) as we dont have them on the Island, I need perfume, a new mascara and bath smellies and fully intend to have them, thus any trauma suffered by going into IKEA will be offsett by Chanel, Estee Lauder and rose petal bath bombs besides I now want to try meatballs and daim cakes thingies

I like to roll this one out every now and then when an Ikea thread comes up

For me a trip to Ikea is a bit like childbirth

It starts off all exciting yet manageable

But by the checkout you're screaming for a caesarian

As you walk through the carpark you're swearing "NEVER again"

Only 6m later...

melikalikimaka · 17/09/2010 17:51

Right, I'm off to Ikea now! See you all there for the meatballs!

tb · 17/09/2010 17:58

Getorf - the café seems like a treat because the arrows and one-way system through the place nearly drive you mental. At least once you're in there with your coffee you can see the outside world.

I used to wonder when going round the Warrington one if anyone had ever gone beserk in there and tried to crash out through the walls.

I agree about the bics sandwiched together with plain choc. Lovely. Costco used to have them when dd was born, and we just had to keep buying them in case any visitors came.

Now the nearest Ikea is either Bordeaux or Toulouse both about 200km away, so have only been about twice in the last 4 years.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 17/09/2010 18:11

AHA! It was you NotNowBernard.
I referred to your IKEA/Childbirth similarities further up the thread but couldnt remember your name!

Funnily enough I decided on a trip to IKEA when in slow labour with DD, thought it might speed things up a bit. Was good fun because I could stop to breathe/die a little and DH couldnt grumble and hurry me up like he usually does so I got to have a good look around! Grin

Islandlady · 19/09/2010 17:01

well I did it in and out in 1/2 hour ( got a bit lost) just bought light and fittings, no tealights no meatballs or daim thingies
just bodyswerved around the people looking at other things and walked through display areas didnt even take a yellow bag - got what I wanted and went .

Cant say I liked the place just not as bad as I thought

I am an Ikea virgin Shock. There are arrows to follow? Shock really?

seb1 · 19/09/2010 17:31

Well done you, I have been to many Ikeas Glasgow, Edinburgh, Gateshead and Southampton, and I have to say Southampton was the one I least liked,I prefer the more out of town set up, min levels, no multi storey car parks etc, and not having to pay to park.

Waltons · 19/09/2010 18:31

Shirleyknot ROFL at this one ... (beware the tealights, you will end up buying a bag of 100 of these fuckers for about tuppence, and then they will live in the cupboard under your sink, gathering dust, and every time you go for the bleach you will see them and think..."oh yeah, I really should use those tealights" and the next time there is a powercut they will have moved to a different cupboard and you will think "I'm sure I had 100 tealights from Ikea in here somewhere..." and then the power will come back and they'll be back in the cupboard under the stairs, and there they will sit, silently taunting you, until you throw them away in shame and irritation)

Anyone needing 99 tealights? I have them to spare ...
