Is it worth applying? Advert came out today, job starts October 1st!

Apply anyway, just in case. I see what you mean though.

MaMoTTaT · 16/09/2010 11:14

October the 1st isn't 1 week away......

Mowgli1970 · 16/09/2010 11:15

Sorry, no it isn't! Application forms have to be in a week tomorrow. Job starts Oct 1st

If you don't apply, you will never know....

Maybe they are re-advertising it?

My mum was on holiday, many moons ago, from a job she hated. I saw an advert for a job, but the date for applications had passed.

She applied anyway, wrote a nice covering letter saying she hoped it was still OK to apply and asking to be considered for the role.

She got the job, worked there for many years, and in fact met my stepfather there...

Hmm wonders if that was such a good move after all... Grin

What kind of organisation is it? If it's somewhere that might have a 'must advertise everything externally' policy even if a perfectly good internal candidate is there, then yes probably someone earmarked. If it's the kind of organisation who is satisfied with not wasting everyone's time internal advertising only if suitable candidates are available, then there might be a genuine need for someone. Perhaps a first appointee dropped out and they are re-advertising with a very short timescale, for example.

It's a teaching post. The other issue is I'm already teaching under contract so I would need to speak to my Head first. Confused

Even if it is 'for' someone, there are so many things that could effect the outcome. They could be applying for other jobs as well. Even if you dont get the job, doing well in the interview can open up further oppourtunities in a school. My dh is a principal and he would always be interviewing with an open mind regardless

Myleetlepony · 16/09/2010 11:36

I'd ring the school and ask. As teachers have to give half a term's notice, they can't be expecting someone to start on October 1st. Unless they are looking for an NQT.

3isthemagicnumber · 16/09/2010 11:44

not sure but is very common for teaching posts to be advertised, with the closing date only 1-2 weeks after, regardless of start date.
If you are under contract though, you wont be free to start until January though.
Give the head a ring-I have found in similar situations they are happy to talk things through to cut back on unecessary 'walk rounds'/applications though wont tell you if it is earmarked for an internal candidate though obviously.

Sounds like they've been dropped in it to be honest. Someone's had a crisis, fallen ill or whatever and not been able to take up the post they'd been appointed to - I've got a suspicion I might have seen this job advertised or I've seen a very very similar one (I keep an eye on the teaching vacancies locally mainly to see which schools have changed heads that I go in) and that's what I thought when I saw it.

Thought they probably have supply in but want someone in ASAP and there are enough unemployed teachers kicking about that WOULD apply for something with that short a date to be honest - not just NQTs.
