I mean it's September. Surely now is too early to buy them? They'd be out of date by then.

AIBU to be grumpy at the sight of them?
Or should I be lured into buying them now and squirreling them away?

The danger of the latter is I would forget where I put them!

Chocolate oranges, mmmmmmm

I love the adverts sanfair. In Ireland we used to celebrate when we saw the Budweiser one every year. I also like the coke one (put all morals aside for festive period)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/09/2010 22:22

But surely stuff bought now ( foodwise ) is out of date by Christmas?!

AnxiousLand · 15/09/2010 23:12

YANBU

I hate Christmas

kezb · 15/09/2010 23:16

I couldn't believe my eyes when i went into town shopping about 4 wks ago and saw christmas cards on sale!!It is far too early. I am simply sick of the sight of xmas bits by the time 25th Dec comes along. Don't get me wrong, i love going out and finding gifts for my friends and family but i think it 's more exciting if you do it nearer to December. i do love xmas shopping on a cold winters day!! At the beginning of each year i write a rough list of who i want to buy presents for and a guide price for each person. I then put away a small amount each month. Don't get me wrong, if i see a gift in Sept/Oct that i know will be loved by someone then i will pick it up, especially if it's for the DD's and it's likely to sell out or is on offer at a great price. On a quite a few occasions now i have tried to be very organised and purchase most of my gifts before November only to find them on offer nearer to xmas or i then see something else that i would have rather bought. I have also cut back on lots of extra food bits as well. Do we need to eat a huge tin of biscuits and sweets, along with chocolates, crisps and all other food stuffs that are re packaged with a sprig of holly to fool you into believing you must buy it for christmas. I'm done with the over indulging on food and gifts, its no unnecessary. What is the real meaning of christmas?

lowrib · 15/09/2010 23:35

"But surely stuff bought now ( foodwise ) is out of date by Christmas?!" not stuff that keeps like chocolate and lots of types of biscuits.

Lenlen · 16/09/2010 05:27

Have to go Christmas shopping early this year (next month) so we won't be rushing things again like last year. It's very tiring when you're rushing to get things done at so short time. Besides more friends added this year waaa

LizzieMint73 · 16/09/2010 07:25

YADNBU. Christmas crap in the shops at this time of year is just the worst example of how the supermarkets and over consumerism has taken over our lives. They spend the next 3 months selling us piles of mince pies and tins of chocs and special offer Baileys. We buy them for Christmas. Eat them in November. Buy them again. All our friends and relatives buy us more for Christmas so then we spend 2 solid weeks stuffing our faces with said mince pies and chocs washed down with baileys and advocaat by the pint. And then it gets to early January and the next time you go to the supermarket all the weight watchers products are on offer and the signs say 'oh look you've got fat - wanna buy some slim fast?'

Take a step back people. Don.t let Tesco etc take over your lives like this.

LunarSea · 16/09/2010 07:55

I really wouldn't buy biscuits or other foodstuffs (or anything else which is readily available from the supermarkets) this early.

But spare a thought for those of us who don't have the luxury of lots of leisurely Christmas shopping time. With a more than full time job, dh frequently working abroad, ds1's full sporting schedule which he needs to be transported to, and ds2's limited attention span for shopping, then you could probably count my non-supermarket shopping hours between now and Christmas in single figures.

So although I don't go out intending to buy Christmas presents this early, if I do happen to see anything particularly suitable at the right price I'll pick it up and put it aside. Ironically the harder the person is to buy for, the earlier I'm likely to buy their present, as I know I'll never get the opportunity to look round at the last minute.

lazycow007 · 16/09/2010 07:56

I love, love, love Christmas and I am one of the rare folk who get a kick out of going in G&T's party shop in Sept and walking through the winter wonderland of trees and tinsel BUT I won't be bamboozled into buying biscuits and food now as best before Jan 11 is ludicrous still - who can eat a whole tin of biscuits (both layers) within one month especially when you get 4 tins of them!!! I did however buy 3 chocoalate snowmen for our Xmas treasure hunt on the 24th Dec as doesn't matter on that best b4 being Jan 11 as ate that night anyway yum yum plus they were more than half price.

Had already bought Xmas cards half price from year b4 and wrapping paper so i guess I am earlier than most in that respect hee hee.

sapphireblue · 16/09/2010 07:56

I have to admit to buying a few christmas gifts yesterday Blush. I don't buy foodstuffs until mid december though, otherwise I end up buying everything twice!! My reason for starting shopping this early is to spread the cost.......if I start in September I can spread it over 3 (or 4 at a push!) month's pay.

I REALLY don't want to see chirstmas decorations up anywhere until December though!

slimyak · 16/09/2010 09:55

I love Christmas, but like others have said not until December. Traditionally we put the decs up the weekend before Christmas but last year I relented and allowed them put the first weekend in December - kids seem to be able to retain the enthusiasm for longer that I can.

Anyway, anything food based that could be bought now is a waste of time as I would eat it - e.g. chocolate, biscuits etc. I could buy the sprouts now and manage to resist the temptation Hmm.

I am however starting my Christmas shopping for gifts (none food based) next weekend with a special trip to Leeds. My excuse being I'll be 36 weeks preg at Christmas so don't plan to do the usual last minute dash.

GabbyLoggon · 16/09/2010 10:19

Sing the answer

Too soon, too soon, too soon too soon
too soon, too soon too soon.

(Its an amazing disgrace, sorry about the limited words)

Dramamama · 16/09/2010 11:32

YANBU, it is a bit too soon i agree.

However i also adore christmas but i tend to ignore anything food wise till nearer the time i just start picking up prezzies now then they are done i have novembers wages to pay for food and last minute bits....the hard part is hiding the prezzies from DS!!!

and my tree goes up on the 1st of Dec every yr, we make it a familly event and let DS take the lead (although i admit i sometimes..re-jig some of the decs a little Wink)

BalloonSlayer · 16/09/2010 12:53

A bit peed off when I couldn't find what I wanted in Sainsbury's yesterday because all the cake shelves were full of Mince Pies, but apart from that I LOVE it when the Christmassy stuff starts to come in.

Goodwill catalogue arrived yesterday and I actually made a little treat out of sitting down to look at it. Shame it was all the same as last year though . . .

Local garden centre is starting to put up its Christmas Decoration extravaganza. Oh the excitement!

nomedoit · 16/09/2010 12:58

I live in the US and Christmas here is such a big thing AND I have to do Thanksgiving as well (American hubby). I have decided this year to have all my prezzie shopping done by December 1 to spread the cost and so I can enjoy December more and actually do family things, not shop. Lots of people here start in July and buy a bit every month and I have done that. Seems like there are so many people to buy for and to post stuff back to the UK...

kreecherlivesupstairs · 16/09/2010 13:04

It's happening in Belgium too. I've just looked at the local free paper and the garden centre is advertising decorations and trees. this is a special garden centre though, the Queen of Belgium gets her horticultural needs met there. Apparently.

JennyPiccolo · 16/09/2010 13:21

i bought a huge box of m&s christmas chocolates at the weekend and just ate them.

Hooray!

nameymcnamechange · 16/09/2010 13:25

I never buy biscuits or chocolates at Christmas anyway. There is tons of other much more yummy stuff to eat and we usually get given a few sweeties. I'll buy one chocolatey item for the dc stockings, some chocolate tree decorations and some of those mint crisp chocs for after lunch and thats it. What is Christmassey about biscuits?

diddl · 17/09/2010 13:13

Here we have Lebkuchen and Dominostein which I only seem to see at Christmas.

They are "gingerbready" & seem just right for Christmas!

Mahraih · 17/09/2010 13:17

YAB a tiny bit U.

I used to think like this: I am now having to budget really, really hard for my first 'grownup' Christmas i.e. I have bills etc to pay as well as just buying presents!

I wouldn't start buying food now, but it's nice to be able to pick up wrapping paper/cards/decorations etc a bit at a time.

spacedog · 17/09/2010 13:29

It's never to early for gingerbread-based foodstuffs, and roll on Starbucks Christmas lattes. I'm a sucker for exploitation, me.

olderandwider · 17/09/2010 13:40

My theory is the shops get in earlier and earlier to tempt those Christmas pounds off us before the rival shops can. It then becomes a race to be earliest because no one is going to buy two lots of cards/wrapping paper/festive biscuits/presents as they don't have the need or the money. I hate it - already been offered seasonal crap from a variety of mail order companies. It's all in the bin. grrr and bah.

fedupofnamechanging · 17/09/2010 15:04

Bought my first Stollen yesterday in Sainsburys. Bugger Christmas - it's for NOW!
Personally, I can see nothing wrong with buying Baileys on offer, drinking it, then buying some more. Win Win!
(Although thinking about it, this may be why I am 3 stone overweight. Oh well)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 17/09/2010 19:27

Actually spacedog I really wanted a gingerbread latte the other day and wondered when they might arrive!!
