to think Cats protection should do there job?

I moved into my rented property october last year and from day one saw a large white cat hanging around who we though was a tom, anyway a few months ago it turned out sh was female and gave birth to a litter in our landlords shed in the garden, the cats protection got involved and took the kittens and spayed mum but rereleased her in our garden thinking she'll just wander off to wherever she came from but this isn't the case, we have since discovered she is deaf (CPL missed that one!) and she wont leave our garden fast forward 3 months and she is a complete nightmare she terrorizes my two cats and will attack my puppy as soon as he is let into the garden, if you try and move her she will scratch to get to whatever animal is close, however on her own she is really affectionate so isn't feral.

I have called the CPL several times asking for them to remove her but they refuse as they are full as are every rescue in my area, believe me I have tried, it is getting to the point where I am considering taking her to get put to sleep.

I have tried posting ads for a home for her as an only pet but have had no interest, I really have no ideas left (I can't just dump her somewhere) but surely given the circumstances the CPL should take her seeing as they had no problems taking the kittens AIBU?

They are a charity and they have no room - what the fuck do you want them to do?

If she'#s pissing you off, take her, a perfectly healthy cat, and have her put down. Or put some adverts up in the pet shop window of the "free to a good home" kind.

Don't just whine about it, do something!

rpickett · 15/09/2010 12:45

I have done the ads but had no interest (see above) and she isn't perfectly healthy no one wants her because she is deaf (been told why she will be hard to home)again see above!

scurryfunge · 15/09/2010 12:45

It is not their job.....they are a charity. If you really want it put down call the RSPCA.

colditz · 15/09/2010 12:47

What do you expect them to do?

rpickett · 15/09/2010 12:47

it's not there job to take in unwanted cats and rehome them? what is there job then?
I wonder where my monthly donations go if that isn't what they are there for, as for they hav no room, like I say they took the bloody kittens with no fuss.

Phone up another charity, even if it is not local and see if they will collect it.

colditz · 15/09/2010 12:55

They had room then./ They don't have room now. Now is a different time, and therefore a different situation, to then.

The do not have a JOB. They are a charity. They are perfectly within their rights to say no to you. How you deal with that is your business.

If you want the cat put down, take it to the vet and have it put down, and stop being so bratty.

Vine · 15/09/2010 13:03

Have you tried putting an ad on somewhere like pre-loved. Which area are you in?

cupcakesandbunting · 15/09/2010 13:05

I don't think that OP is being bratty. It's a nightmare having a persistant cat stalking your garden all the time. We had one last year and my cat started getting so scared that she started shitting in the house because she was too scared to go out.

CPL wouldn't help, nor the RSPCA. I tried for 8 months but they couldn't help. They told me to stop encouraging it to come into the garden (wtf?!) In the end, a lady at another cat sanctuary gave me the number of a vets that took in strays so I took it there. I don't know if they put it down or re-homed it but I tried all I could to get ot re-homed and nothing.

rpickett · 15/09/2010 13:07

I'm in suffolk, yes preloved, gumtree, pet classifieds so many to name, I have tried everywhere I can think of as well as every local rescue but no interest, it's a shame cos she is lovely one on one and would make a great companion if an only pet, hence why I dont want to put her down unless a last resort but she is costing me in vets bills after an attack on my puppy, I also have two young toddlers who I worry about being in the garden with her there as she is unpredicatable.

girlywhirly · 15/09/2010 13:08

rpickett, have you tried advertising the cat at vet surgeries? I know that my vet has a folder of pets to adopt. My reasoning is, a pet owner with a pet with chronic illness or special needs is more likely to adopt another, as they have the experience to manage it. The vets may know of someone locally who will take the cat off your hands.

Of course the kittens were taken by CP, they were more likely to be adopted quickly, therefore taking less resources and finances than an adult cat with special needs; such a cat is likely to be a long staying animal (think months or even years), and as you say they just haven't the room at the moment.

scurryfunge · 15/09/2010 13:08

Try Blue Cross in Felixstowe, I have used them in the past and they were brilliant.

mamatomany · 15/09/2010 13:09

We had one causing trouble in our garden, advertised everywhere for the owner. Ended up taking it to the vet and having it spayed at our expense, that calmed it down a bit but I had the bite marks for months trying to get the bugger into the basket.
Surely your puppy will grow up and bark at it, hopefully frightening it away in time ?

mamatomany · 15/09/2010 13:10

Or offer the CPL a donation to come and get it.

Vine · 15/09/2010 13:13

I am sure that someone will take her eventually. YANBU but please don't have her put down.

I would take her once we move but that will not be for another year! I am in Norfolk and will let you know if I come across anyone looking for a cat.

rpickett · 15/09/2010 14:04

Girlywhirly - I spoke to the vets I'm registered with and had no success but will phone around the others in the area, thank you for the idea.

Mamatomany/Cupcakesandbunting I'm glad I'm not alone, I also do pay a monthly donation to CPL as I used to be a fan of what they do, very reluctant to give them anymore if they refuse to help when it is needed.

Scurryfunge I will try them thank you.

Vine - I really wouldn't want to put her down unless I hd no other option as I do like cats and would feel so guilty, but thank you for keeping your ears open.

Vallhala · 15/09/2010 14:11

rpickett - I'm a rescuer (mostly dogs but I get all sorts!). I'll happily foster her until I can find a good home for her (which will be homechecked etc).

Please contact me at [email protected] and I will give you my phone number, tell you more about and give you references on me and so on.

I'd be grateful if you'd post here saying you have emailed me if you're going to as the address I have given is a temporary one for forum use and not the one I normally use so I don't remember to check it unless I get prodded. :)

Vallhala · 15/09/2010 14:15

PS, I have 3 cats of my own who she is unlikely to be able to terrorise and 3 dogs.

She'll get nowhere with my Lab x but will no doubt terrorise my 2 German Shepherds!

rpickett · 15/09/2010 17:06

Vallhala, I have emailed you regarding your offer thank you.

Thanks, RP, I've replied.

Vallhala · 21/09/2010 21:29

Update:

rpickett very kindlly brought this little girl to my house this evening. Our new friend, who is thought to only be about 3 years old, is adorable. She's been fed and watered, had plenty of cuddles and so far met my Lab X (not too keen on him because he's nosy), my long haired white GSD (pinched some of his food and deems him okay because he just went to sleep at the other end of the room and left her alone) and my ginger tom cat. To my delight she was tolerant of ginger mog, who was wisely cautious in his approach to her.

She's a little darling and will remain here until we can find her a permanent home where she will get 1 to 1 love and attention and where the fact that she is deaf and thus there are additional safety issues are accommodated.

I and other animal rights supporters will also be asking some questions of the CPL as to the acceptability of dumping a deaf cat back into the a garden instead of providing her with shelter and finding her a home. I fail to see that a large charity with thousands of supporters is unable to do what I have done.

rpickett, thank you and wishing you and yours well. I'll be thinking of you especially in early November. :)

CelticStarlight · 21/09/2010 23:37

Valhalla

Thank you for typing that update. I am so pleased the little white cat has found a loving temporary home and the chance of a loving, suitable permanent home in the future.

I take my hat off to you for the the work you do, you sound a kind and lovely person.

OP, I think some of the replies to you on this thread were a bit uncalled for TBH. It is clear that you had perfectly valid reasons for wanting the cat removed and it seems you had done all the right things with regard to rehoming her.

Anyway, nice to know that all's well that end's well.

MeelooMouloo · 21/09/2010 23:48

Sad that you had bad time with yr local CPL.

The Crewe & Nantwich branch in S.Cheshire were really helpful to us when we had to rehome one of our cats as an emergency.

guess it depends on the people staffing it.

lovingthesun · 21/09/2010 23:56

Valhalla Fantastic news you have got her & great that rpickett highlighted this.

I had a deaf white cat who was a house cat, she just loved to sleep ! I wonder if this little cat will settle down now she is in a home environment & learns she is safe ?

DomesticG0ddess · 22/09/2010 08:42

That's great to hear Valhalla, you must be really glad you can help.

Please don't be too hard on the CP though - my mum looks after long term "boarders" for them (after years of looking after all types as well as fundraising, etc). It is a massive commitment as you know - even making it difficult for her to see my DS as much as they would like to because she can't always find someone who can look after these animals in her absence (we live about 5 hours away). Therefore it's a big deal to take in another adult cat, and it sounds like that branch do not have enough people willing to do so. Not everyone is as willing as you (or my mum).
