To miss the days where things were just things?

For example, my baby has a scarf that plays music. She has a put-the-shape-in-the-hole board that praises you and plays music. Her play mat has hundreds of functions.

DS has such delights as a singing measuring tape and some toy cars that talk.

DD1 has a mirror that delivers compliments. Her bicycle has a little attachment that makes it sound like a motorbike.

This is topped by prams that vibrate, and mobiles that light up...

In a way, I just hate the noise... but part of me misses the simple times. AIBU?

Battery operated things drive me mad.

Coming into work on a cold, dark winters morn... the delivery had been delivered the day before (my day off) I'd switched the alarm off and opened the staff door to ascend the stairs when I heard a tiny childlike voice. I almost died, wouldnt of minded it if it was a toy i'd recognised and I could just think "ohh that's so and so toy" but this was a new teddy bear liftout toy that I'd never seen or heard before so I was fucking terrified. I had to wait downstairs on the shopfloor for the other member of staff to arrive so she could go upstairs with me! Blush

I was in a charity shop the other day, a lady came in with a black bin bag full of toys and put it on the counter as a donation. As she put it down a cacophony of tunes/chatter/boings/whizzes etc started up. The woman behind the counter went "Shock how do I switch them off??!" the donating lady replied "Blush you can't" and legged it out of the door quick.

I nearly gave her a round of applause Grin

lol ProfYaffle great story! :)

I tend to buy 'old fashioned' toys for this very reason. DS's favourite toy is a wooden shape sorter thing that doesn't really do anything.

Grin ProfYaffle!

We were once given a toy drum set from somebody I thought of as a very dear friend. Said gift truly made me wonder "What have I ever done to you?", but was thankfully rather quickly thrashed to pieces.

I detest all the electronic jingeling/singing/beeping/squeaking/high-pitched voices, but proper bells or kids imitating car noises/sirens don't annoy me at all.

Thinking back, I had a doll that could 'speak' (well, she had like mini records in her back ) and even as a child I found her stupid phrases interfered with what I wanted to play at the time.

So all the things I give as presents are mute Wink, whether the kids like it or not. I know the parents will remain my friends....Grin
