Is it ok to leave a dog in a locked car with windows closed in cool, Autumn weather?

I honestly don't know, not being a dog owner, but on a cloudy, Autumn day, saw a dog in the boot of a car in a car park and was a bit shocked. And then I found out it was someone going to the same group as me so the dog was in there for, I know, about 2 hours, being checked on every now and then.

Is this ok?

What would you have done if it isn't ok?

Personally I wouldn't, more due to the risk of theft at this time of the year (I'm very overprotective careful with my dog with this, after a man attempted to steal my Grandmas dog off me when I was a kid. It was pure luck that i managed to get away with the dog in tow TBH) but also in case the sun came out. The inside of cars can heat up so quickly. In some cases it is unavoidable but in the vast majority it is better to just leave the dog at home IMO.

SkyLineDrifter I'm so proud of your daughter. If more people were like this people would stop seeing it as okay.

I could never leave ours in the car for more than just nipping in to pay for petrol.
A couple of times when I've wanted to get some shopping on the way home from somewhere, I've driven home and dropped the dog off first and gone out again.

I once had a dog that loved the car so much in the end we had a car just for her - her own mobile kennel.
Difficult to say about leaving dogs in this weather, it only takes a short spell of sunshine this time of year for the car to heat up, so the situation is local to your area. However that said i don't think I'd leave a dog nowdays due to theft, we live in what I would consider to be a 'safe area' but a friend had his dog stolen from his car-sort of good ending he got it back over a year later dirty, rundown and had had puppies, but she recovered well.
