DP really embarrassed me today

We were in the supermarket paying for our groceries and the lad behind the checkout handed up two carrier bags. After they had ran out we still had loads of stuff to pack away but he didn't offer anymore bags. DP said quite loudly "You not giving out anymore bags then?" so the lad replied "sorry no, they were my last ones and I was told once they've gone I have to sell the bags for life instead. They're only 5p, do you want one?". I was about to say I'd have two but DP flew into a rage about how pathetic it was and that he was going to complain. The lad ignored him mostly and carried on putting the shopping through but DP carried on, accussed the lad of keeping bags under the till to which the lad offered to show DP under his till (DP actually went around behind the till to check which was mortifying) and then carried on kicking off. At one point he said "Is Adolf Hitler running this place or what?" to which I seriously contemplated walking out. I was so embarrassed. DP then went and checked behind the neighbouring till whilst complaining loudly until people were staring at us. The lad then shouted across to another young till assistant "This is all because I have no more carrier bags" and they both started laughing. Out of sheer frustration, another employee came and dumped a load of carrier bags on the belt. I apologised to the lad and walked off as DP was instructing the staff to put up a clear sign at the entrance "warning" people that there are no carrier bags etc. We must have been a laughing stock. He knows I'm angry and has been pretty quiet since. I'm not over-reacting am I? Would you have been embarrassed or am I just a wimp? I dread to think what DD would have done if she'd been with us, she'd have never shopped with us again.

Your husband sounds like a complete tit.

I'm glad places charge for bags nowadays, it makes me cringe seeing people put one or two items in bag that you could just as easily carry without one.

Why don't people take their own bags these days? It's easy enough to do!

angelberry · 12/09/2010 15:17

Brightlight, the store in the OP did have bags though, which appeared when the customer made a fuss.

diddl · 12/09/2010 15:18

To be fair, the lad was only doing his job & as he had been told by his superiors.

It´s a shame OPs partner didn´t take it up with someone else if he was that bothered rather than bullying the cashier.

spikeycow · 12/09/2010 15:18

If I was complaining to a checkout assistant I'd like them to say something like "I know there should be bags isn't it daft". I'd be disarmed then we could moan together. I hate all that robotic "sorry for any inconvienence caused" toeing the party line cack.

If you don't have enough bags to serve your customers as they expect, then raise that with your managers and make sure you get more.

Expecting people to buy a bag they do not want and did not plan to purchase because you have "run out" is poor customer service and sharp practise.

It is very, very rude to expect that, and if people are annoyed that is to be expected. If your management are putting staff in this position as a matter of policy, speak to your union.

I don't always have bags with me, not if i have popped in spur of the moment and ended up picking up loads of offers.

The supermarket should have a clear policy, free bags or no free bags. If free, they need to have plenty in stock.

And if they run out of free bags, in that circumstance, they should give out bags for life free. Its called customer service and the supermarkets can well afford it.

"Brightlight, the store in the OP did have bags though, which appeared when the customer made a fuss."

Yes, but the cashier who was being abused didn´t have any-and OPs partner didn´t believe him-I think that´s horrible tbh.

Wonder if he would have believed someone else?

booyhoo · 12/09/2010 15:22

i also don't get this thing about having new bags everytime you shop. what does everyone do with all these bags they bring home??? their hosues must be coming down with plastic bags. my mum has this great thing that fits in her trolley and has two bamboo sticks as handles. she offloads it at the till and reloads it once the shopping comes through the other side and then it just lifts out and into the boot of the car.

BecauseImWorthIt · 12/09/2010 15:23
Grin

inconvenience

It's common in French supermarkets to only get a bag if you pay for it. And they all seem to manage over there.

usualsuspect · 12/09/2010 15:23

My dd frequently moans to her union rep..nothing gets done though

Supermarkets are cutting back on plastic bags as part of a policy to reduce environmental waste. Until people realise that they will go on producing them in a bid to retain their competition over other stores.

Quite frankly your dh should be a shamed, not just of his behaviour, which was completely reprehensible, but also for his complete ignorance of the bigger picture.

diddl · 12/09/2010 15:29

I can see how sometimes you buy more than you can carry & if you are walking, need a bag.

But if for example you have a car, is it really so hard to take trolley to car & put things loose in car?

angelberry · 12/09/2010 15:29

That's just ridiculous. Why aren't you given enough bags? A supermarket either provides bags or it doesn't. If it doesn't, it should make that clear. I happily pay for bags in Aldi, as I know to expect that, but I'm not paying extra in Sainsbury's when I'm charged plenty already for the privilege of shopping there, and there are plenty of free bags if only someone could be arsed to fetch them.

This isn't the same as the situation you describe though, brightlight, I expect that was a difficult day. In a genuine 'shortage' situation, I'd be much more sympathetic to the poor harrassed cashier, and do my best to cope without them.

BuzzingNoise · 12/09/2010 15:30

I'd have been chucking away at your dh!
Sounds like crap management rules to me.
