... because I'm not convinced. (See - I don't even know what to call the place!).

Leaving Cert students can and do apply to UK universities - I can think of one in Leicester and one recently finished in Stirling. So I wouldn't lose sleep over that; but do look at schools, what subjects they offer at secondary level, and especially what subjects aren't on offer! Smaller schools tend to have fewer subjects either side of the border.

But Scotland doesn't have the A Level system, does it? And no fees for Scottish born students?(I lose track, as I do with AS levels which my nephews and nieces do, and modules of GCSEs - which aren't Scottish?)

Iggi999 · 10/09/2010 23:44

No A Levels here, it's Highers - but we do have one or two non-Scottish students in the universities Grin

stleger · 10/09/2010 23:45

(I'd live nearer Derry though, as I don't like commuting and love cities!)

(My dh worked on a six month contract in St Andrews, excellent chip shop, very few Scots. Lots of loud Oxbridge accents, was my impression there!) We had a few moves, in the end I was just grateful to find somewhere fairly permanent to live...with a couple of semesters away. Good luck, with the application and any decisions which have to be made Smile

Iggi999 · 10/09/2010 23:58

Sorry Maryz, I was referring to Scotland - it's A levels in NI.

stleger · 11/09/2010 00:04

maryz, NIreland do A Levels, as do England and Wales (I think Wales! They must). Scotland is Highers, which is more subjects (I think) so resembles Leaving Cert. Having just survived my ds doing Leaving Cert. I'm in a state of bewilderment about most things. Oh, don't they have mega fireworks in Derry at Halloween, I love fireworks Grin

tassisssss · 11/09/2010 00:31

wow, tough one HA. xx

Dione · 11/09/2010 00:38

No, but like seriously like you know what your gut is saying and it's screaming. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Oh yeah have to say the other good things about working in Derry, Halloween is great an you can live in Donegal. Try Greencastle, just a ferry ride away. Don't, I repeat don't live in Derry.

Good morning - thank you all for your comments. A reasonable night's sleep and I'm feeling much more settled about the whole thing. As scottishmummy says, it's a job and they are few and far between. I would be very happy with schooling and I'm sure that I could find something to become occupied with once children are settled.

Only twitches (atm) are - stay in Scotland and we don't (atm) pay fees for University (need to be resident here for 3 years) and equally if from Eire then don't pay fees as classed as EU (at least if they go to University in Scotland) and house prices - all very well moving somewhere cheaper than Aberdeen but how will that affect moving back ...

I am very confident that what will be, will be and we should be grateful that there is something rather than nothing. I will visit at the end of the month with a positive frame of mind Smile.
