To be ordinarily completely against violence but finding that I have to use a massive amount of will power not to punch this man in the face over and over again....

So, Im doing a degree at night, Im in year two.

One of the men in my class is such an utter gobshite that he actually makes me want to tear my ears off so I never have to hear another word out of his mouth again.

Thankfully, we dont spend much time together - we have two 4 hour lectures per week and we have a 15 minute break where we end up chatting.

Hes one of those who honestly think he knows it all when really - he knows nothing.

Things hes said:

When telling a story about someone:
"this lad's wife apparantly had post natal depression or another one of those made up illnesses"

When I had ds:
another classmate: "whens the christening"
me: "next Friday"
Gobshite: "I hope its not the Catholic faith you are christening him into, I hope its a Protestant church, nothing but paedophiles and rapists those lot"

When telling me and another (male) classmate that his wife is pregnant:
"...and I did it from behind with just one dart. Honestly, Im the most fertile man in the country, one dart from behind! thats all it took!sperm banks everywhere are looking for me. A lad that works with me cant have a baby, they are going through IVF and all that, I was slagging the sh*t outta him, telling him to send her to me cos one dart was all it took"

Honestly he is the biggest dick I have ever came across in my entire life. Hes about 36/37 so I cant blame immaturity on his ignorance. I know I shouldnt let it bother me but I find myself avoiding him like the plague. I cant stand him.

Every time you talk to him just precede all your comments with "I would really like your input on this. You tend to have such an, erm, innocent outlook and....It's just that I deal with so many teenagers and it would really help me to get into their heads...".

Being of the older persuasion Blush I've come across an awful lot of people like this.
I used to be what is known up here in Scotland as a "nippy sweetie" - i.e. I took no prisoners and lots of these folk felt the rough edge of my tongue.
I have since developed a more "acceptable" way of dealing with them:
I tend to counter these types of statements (such as you describe) with:
"I'm afraid I disagree with you - why is that your opinion?"
"Do you really believe that?"
"Did you really say that?"
I've come to the conclusion, over the years, that if you push people (and make them justify their statements) they start to think before they speak.
And you have the added satisfaction of making them squirm by appearing genuinely interested in their thought processes!
