To spend DD's birthday money on bedroom stuff?

DD is 2 next month and my dad has given her £150 birthday money.

We are currently extending her bedroom as it is tiny. When its done I was going to buy Peppa Pig curtains, bedding etc as we are buying her a bed. I thought that it would be good to use this money.

My Mum (Divorced from my Dad) says thats awful and that I should spend it on something she should get enjoyment out of, like toys. She has plenty and is getting alot of HappyLand for her birthday and Christmas.

When I turned 13 I asked to have my room decorated as a birthday present - obviously not the same, as your 2 year old has no choice, etc - but IT IS a lovely prsent to have a nicely decorated room.
If DD loves Peppa I'd say go for it! As DF always gives same amount it might be nice to ask him what (if anything) he's expecting you to do with it. Does he think you'ree saving it every time? Might be his way of investing in her future but that's his place to say in advance really not yours to guess at.

yanbu - it's a fab idea; although I would not spend it all on the bedroom.
I have done the same and bought dd a duvet cover with some money that she was given. She was 1 at the time and did not need any toys but as we were in process of doing her room; it seemed like a sensible idea and not at all cheeky as someone has mentioned earlier.

StarExpat, my DD is the same as yours, has no understanding of choosing a present and wouldn't know if she didn't get any presents.

I am not concerned about her development in any way at all. Please don't worry, I think the other posters were talking in a general sense about children of all ages.

HumphreyCobbler · 11/09/2010 22:24

actually, not only am I not concerned about her development, I am convinced she is an exceptionally bright child Grin

YANBU My 6yo DS is a huge Dr Who fan so Grandad bought him a TARDIS wardrobe for his birthday he loves this more than the yoys he got that are hardly looked at after the wrappings off them.

when dd1 got her "Balamory bed" (i.e. a duvet cover), you would have thought she'd won the lottery jackpot she was so pleased. It took her a lot longer to "grow out" of that than an age-specific toy.

I haven't spent £150 in one fell swoop, but certainly the general idea of getting things for the bedroom as presents we've done for both of ours.

I got curtain-money from my parents for my birthday this year too!

(clearly there's something wrong with my family. But we're happy!!)
