This is more of a what would you have done? Packed my ds s bag for swimming and he saw that it was his mr men trunks .His other ones are at the caravan so no alternative .He was inconsolable, cying his eyes out and very worried he was going to look stupid. I tried my best to rest his fears to no avail. He is usually fine but i found it so hard when its a life times lesson to not to care what people think and want to fit in so much !

Sigh of relief .....he was ok .Nobody noticed and teased him thank goodness. Smile
Perhaps Mr Men trunks are quite cool after all !

Glad he wasn't teased but seriously not cool.

It's like swings. Children love them, think they're babyish, then sit on them 'ironically' when older teens.

edam · 10/09/2010 16:18

phew! But agree with narky, they are not cool and I'd buy him some plain ones to be on the safe side. He may not have been teased today, but you already know he was very upset at having to wear them. And one day soon someone is going to have a go.

Yes don't worry i have taken notice of all your comments am off to get some more tomorrow .I was getting really worried that i had thrown him into the lions den and he would never forgive me !

i have to say i do think it's quite sad when 8 year olds get teased for wearing mr men or any character clothing. 8 is still very little. it's a bit sad but i do understand it.

i had a mr men t shirt when i was 11 have great pic of me with it on, along with page boy hairstyle.

we just grew up slower then i guess, or weren't so influenced

narkypuffin · 10/09/2010 16:34

I think we did grow up slower. The pressure for having the 'right' brand schoolbag started at 12/13 when I was a child. Now 7 year olds care.

My 8yo DS1 would die if made to wear Mr men swimming trunks. TBH I seriously doubt that my DS2 who will be 7 in November would wear them either. He might (at a stretch) wear Ben10, but Mr men?? That's aimed at 3-5yr olds, not someone who could be on the brink of puberty, like my 8 and a half yr old DS1. And YES he will get the mickey taken out of him, for wearing 'babies' trunks. My 8yo won't even take a patterned PE bag or swim bag to school with him, he insists they are plain.

CardyMow · 10/09/2010 16:42

And before you ask, yes, he is on the brink of puberty, he is 4ft6, has size 3 feet, and is starting to get a slight 'tash' on his upper lip. He is growing on average an inch every 6 weeks, and even the GP has said he is on the brink of puberty. Not all dc develop at the same rate. In a year group of 60 8-9 yr olds (yr4), there will be at least one boy starting puberty, and by the end of the year, at least one girl who has started her periods these days.

My DS will be 7 in November and has a Mr Men T Shirt. He likes it. I think. Will be checking I haven't been forcing him to wear it against his will.

upahill · 10/09/2010 17:25

There are a lot of 'young' t shirts that DS2 have been downgraded to wear as pj tops because he likes them but not enough to wear in public.
Noah you may find your lad may do the same.

I don't care whether people think this is sad and it wasn't like that back in the day or children should be free to wear what they want.
I think he is knowing his own mind and being assertive and anyway there are things I wear in the house but wouldn't be seen dead over our drive in because I would die of shame!! (Ugg style boots that I wear as slippers for example!)

LouMacca · 10/09/2010 17:55

Noah - Mr Men T-Shirt is fine for a 6 year old Smile. I think once they go into Junior School they do see things as being babyish unfortunately.

YABVU - poor boy, could you not have written a letter saying they were lost and if a replacement pair not found, he would sit and watch.
